@Chrissy Page got me thinking over in the gadget thread I posted ... She posted about a device for her microwave that lets her use normal popcorn kernels instead of the bags. Got me thinking about healthy and/or low calorie snacks. I like: --Pop Secret 100 cal bags --Fibre One bars (esp the lemon ones!) --Fresh cherries. A cup has about 70-80 calories --Yoplait Greek 100 yogurts I also really like mixing up things, like fruit and yogurt with nuts/dried fruit, or making up a salad with all kinds of ingredients. I am forever creating new things, trying to come up with tasty snacks that are not too calorific. What are your favorites?
Lol, I love the lemon fiber one Bars, I think there only 90 calories. I'm not a yogurt fan but I love the Greek Yogurt ice cream bars for 120 calories and lots of protein. Although sugary I also love the coconut water outshine bar for 60 calories. Tropical sugar free popsicles for 15 calories and it takes a while to eat. These are just off the top of my head, will think some more. I also buy those individual tiny carrots for 35 calories a bag and make a salsa dipping type sauce since taco sauce and salsa is low calorie. I microwave the carrots a little, don't like them too hard and crown breaking. The seaweed snacks ...25 calories. I used to make kale chips in the oven until I got tired of kale...those were good.
Pardon me for intruding into this thread. I just remembered the fresh cherries that we bought in Hongkong. On our first afternoon, we saw a store selling fresh cherries for less than US$10 per pound on our way to the park near the hotel. We bought a pound and snacked on it while in the park. On the following day, we again bought a pound in the fruit market for almost the same price. We grabbed that opportunity because fresh cherries are very expensive here, they cost a fortune that's why we don't buy, not because we cannot afford it but because it is exorbitant. I would rather buy 3 family size pizza instead of a kilo of cherries. Here's the selfie of those cherries...
Oh, where do you get your seaweed snacks?! They sound good. I used to eat veggie chips too. I would sometimes get them in Fresh Market, though we don't have one of those around here. I noticed Wal-Mart selling something similar recently, but I refuse to pay what they are charging for such a small container. Maybe I should try making my own. That frozen coconut water pop sounds good. I will have to try that too!
Traders Joes but the best price is Costco. Traders Joe's is a 2 serving container and Costco's is one serving container but it's still cheaper. Everywhere else they are expensive. Outshine bars aren't cheap either, you have to catch the sales.
Wow, that's expensive! I always thought cherries cost a lot here, but not compared to what you pay for them.
@Chrissy Page, thank you for the tips. I will have to check at Trader Joe's as I'm going to Clarksville this weekend. I think they have one there. :/ I guess I need to research first! I was thinking the same thing about the price of the cherries. I thought that anything more than $4/lb was expensive, although even I have been known to pay $5/lb when I was desperate. I just love cherries so much. I usually try to wait until they are in season and the grocery stores start competing with each other. For a couple weeks here I was getting them around $2/lb. That was perfect. I'd buy 1-2 bags a week!
You made me salivate with your costing. I wonder when I would buy that cheap cherries at $2 per pound. Maybe I would be eating cherries for a week if the price is that cheap. By the way, we are going to S&R after work today and maybe there are fresh cherries there. But I never buy from there because cherries are priced at 1,500 pesos per kilo. That's more than $30 per kilo. As what my husband would say, it is foolish to buy at exorbitant prices.
@Texas Beth yummy mangoes are nice. I love all fruit! Actually, I am not crazy about grapefruit, but even that I like the flavor of it in something else. I also lately discovered 'crunchy grapes' and 'crunchy apples' from Sunkist. They are freeze dried fruit. They start off crunchy and they go kinda chewy. They are not cheap, though, so I tend to just buy one bag every once in a great while when I am craving something fun and sweet.
@Diana Kristof I am in love with those Fiber One bars. Great taste for 90 calories. Cherries have been on sale at some of my favorite stores, and they are so good for you. I love them too. Admittently they are not cheap, but so good. I also like Yoplait LIght yogurt. They have some wonderful flavors and are all around 100 calories. I also like 100 calorie bags of popcorn.
@K E Gordon they are pretty tasty. Lemon is my favorite, but I do also really like the mint. I recently tried the coffee cake bars, and while they are very tasty, they kind of just make me want to make a real coffee cake and eat the whole thing. Their strudel bars are amazing too, but they are 150 calories, if I remember correctly. But I must admit that one of the best parts about Fiber One is that you can't really eat more than one or you will regret it. Ha ha. Made that mistake only once, and it will never happen again.
Another good thing is frozen grapes and frozen bananas. The frozen bananas when processed or smoothed taste just like ice cream, and frozen grapes are truly the bomb. I should try freezing some of my fave mango, peach ice tea as I love drinking it. I need to try to find something to use for molds though. I don;t have any ice cube trays. I might look to see how much molds are in the store. Good Ideas everyone!!!
Ha ha ha, I forgot that you were down that way! @K E Gordon I forgot, I used to freeze grapes too. Those were a nice yummy snack, particularly in the hot summer months.
