Sometimes I dream that I was flying. Mostly it is like jumping and when my feet leave the ground, I seem to be floating. It's a nice feeling that when I wake up, I would close my eyes and savor that dream of flying for some more seconds.

One friend who is into occult said that when dream that you are flying means your spirit is leaving your body. And you can feel your spirit levitating but since your mind couldn't comprehend so your mind invents something that you can understand, that is floating on air or flying.

I used to dream a lot about flying. Usually it began with me walking without my feet touching the ground and no-one would notice that I was levitating. It was a nice sensation and then I would start to jump big distances, again without touching the ground. Sometimes I would end up by flying or floating up high.

I'm not sure about the idea of your spirit leaving the body since I don't understand why that would happen and I'm not really a believer in that sort of occult activity. All I know is that anything in possible in a dream and I used to enjoy those flying dreams, which I never seem to have now.

I seriously hate flying in an airplane, and I usually do not even dream that I am flying. the few times that i have dreamed that i was actually flying, as opposed to falling; they have been dreams where I was comfortable with flying.
One dream was one were I was some kind of a pilot, and I understood what all of the buttons and gauges on the dash of the plane were for, so I just flew it up into the air wand was flying all around. It was a really strange dream, and one of those dreams where I thought that in the dream I was a different person than myself.
The only other flying dream that I had was more like the "just floating in the air" kind, and I was not in any kind of an aircraft; just sailing around in the sky and going past buildings. It was an interesting experience because, in the dream, I was not afraid of heights and it did not bother me to look down to the ground.
Usually, even stepping on the first step of a regular stepstool causes me to be alarmed. (Poor Bobby has to change all of the burned out lightbulbs in our house)

@Yvonne Smith, that mention of falling reminds me of my high school days when I would usually wake up with that feeling - that I was on a high place and I would be falling. But before I hit the ground, I would wake up, panting and feeling tired. The oldsters say that a dream of falling means you are growing, physically growing that's why that dream of falling is only prevalent in adolescents (although I sometimes experienced that in my adult life).

I used to get those sort of dreams as well. I never seemed to get very far off the ground, but I would be walking or running without touching the ground.

As for flying in aeroplanes, the oddest dream I had was the plane that turned into a London Underground train, making a perfect landing on the railway line and passing through several Underground stations on its way to Heathrow airport.

There are times, mostly in the morning, when I am drifting in and out of sleep, where I will get the sensation of flying. I'm not sure that I am sleeping at that time, however; maybe somewhere in between. It begins with the sensation of a click in the occipital region of my head; not audible, but the feeling as if a switch has been moved. This is followed by what I can only describe as a sort of a forward movement that begins in the frontal lobe, and then I feel as if I am moving forward, flying. I can sense peripheral movement similar to the blur that would occur if I were moving quickly, although there are no visual images forward. This doesn't describe it accurately, but it's as if I am still lying in bed but a portion of my consciousness is flying.

Well, there are those who believe that in the sleep state our soul can leave our bodies. I don't know for sure that this is true, but it could explain the sensation of flying. It could also explain the sensation of feeling like we are falling. This could come when the soul returns abruptly to the body. I know this may sound silly but this is a theory that I have heard of. Not saying a completely believe it but it is interesting to ponder.

Hmm, this is similar to my dreams. Often times, when I am about to fall asleep, I suddenly imagine myself walking. Suddenly, I am climbing steps, and I trip on one. Instead of falling, I keep on flying, and that's when I notice that I've fallen asleep. I can't seem to control my dreams, sadly.

If you believe in astral travel, that seems to be it. I have this colleague a long time ago named Naty. Her sister was into astral travel. And the first manifestation of a successful astral projection is that feeling of flying and falling and flying and falling. And how did you notice that you were asleep, did you see yourself on the bed while you were floating on air? Anyway, that astral travel is for the learned and we should not try it with little knowledge.. it may be a poison.

When I was young (school age) I had many dreams of flying. I would fly body solo high above the trees and electrical wires, sometimes having to flap my arms like bird wings to avoid hitting one. Through the years I have asked people if they have dreams of flying. I got all sorts of replies, mainly "what are you nuts"? Yet I found out from people I did talk to, that had flying dreams, flew at different levels. Some close to the ground and so on up to the height of mine. I never spoke to anyone that went cloud high.

I never dreamed of flying at any atitude. I don't like to fly and wouldn't unless it was an extreme emergency and I can't think of an emergency bad enough to cause me to buy a ticket anywhere. I took flying lessons one time. Went through ground school, passed that, took flying lessons right up to my solo triangler flight. My instructor had gone to Wichitas, Kansas to buy two new planes, Pipers something or other. I was to take my solo flight on Monday. He came in from Wichita around midnight Saturday night. Clipped the highlands at the end of his runway on his landing approach. Slung him nose first into the ground. Killed instantly. Later, his wife also a pilot and instructor at Sheppard Air Force Base offered to sponsor me and allow me to solo and get my license. I turned her down. Flying is just too safe for me. I want to drive a fast car, take my chances with the thousands of other drivers who crowd the highways and byways. When I dream. I dream of getting lost or unemployed and trying to hussle a buck to put food on the table.

Wow @Bill Boggs That's really sad about your flight instructor and I can see why you changed your mind about flying after that. :(

I don't consider flying safe...but now days it's probably as safe as any other means of transportation. We live in a really crazy world now days.

I always say I will never fly again after my experience...but once in a while I think if I knew someone I could really trust with a small private plane I just might give it one more try. Never will I get in a big commercial plane though unless I'm dead already.

I said flying is safe because every pilot I ever met would tell me how much safer flying is over driving a car. Guess I was being a mite sarcastic. Maybe flying is safer, I don't know but a couple or three incidents caused me not to care how safe or unsafe flying is, I'll drive.

I wish a train went everywhere...that would definitely be my favorite way to travel. :)

Interestingly, I think, even though my first trip in a helicopter ended with the chopper crashing and burning, I have never dreamed about it.
