I'm just going to go to Amazon now and see if they'll send me a sample if not I'll read the beginning to see if I like the style of writing.

    Edit: got a sample :)

Just a quick glance and it looks good so will get it. Thanks.

@Chrissy Page Something you might enjoy is the free magazines you can get from the library.
Hundreds of magazines and you can download the latest issues.
They look real good on an iPad or large tablet.
I get Smithsonian and National Geographic to name a few.

Look on the library home page for Zinio and you can download the app for iOS, android and kindle fire.
Easy to do and as I stated, they really look great.

Thanks Tim. Will take a look.

I just bought the book Diane was talking about for my kindle. So far I like it a lot.

I think it's more of a book women would like but I don't know...

Wow @Diane Lane, I'm only about 20% through the book and although I knew about Scientology in general terms and mainly about the few stars that are in it, I never thought of how it affected the children....interesting reading for sure.

Now I'm interested to talk to my daughter's BIL and his estranged moms involvement in the cult. I won't get to talk to him though since he lives in AZ and commutes to Rhode Island every week for his job.

My daughter knows more of his story though than I do so will question her.

I do know he's from southern CA. And I saw the mom once when my daughter had a baby shower for her sister in law, his wife.

This was at least 10 yrs ago. She was attractive, very thin and very quiet.

If I ever get a larger tablet, I'd definitely like to look into those magazines from the library. I love nature pictures and shows. That's one thing I do miss about having cable, I was able to see a lot of nature and animal-themed shows via National Geographic and similar channels. At some point, i might be able to see them again via Hulu or Sling.

@Chrissy Page It really was a good read. I just finished it about an hour ago. I'm glad you're enjoying it. It's sad how much time people spend in situations like that, wasting their lives away, without realizing it. If you watch that interview (the expose she did on Scientology), you can see just how programmed she was, when they show clips of her talking about how the world will be saved only through Scientology. Kirstie Alley is very against her now that she's come out against it.

I just started the 2nd romance book from the library. This is one of a series by the same author as the other romance I read prior to the Leah Remini book, but this one's about a Texas ranching family. The other was about a Colorado ranching family. So far, it's a good read.

Yes, I'm glad I bought the book @Diane Lane. I also talked to my daughter, she's probably going to get it too after she finishes binge watching something.shes been watching on showtime.

Although they have showtime on their cable, she also pays $9 a month to have it on her iPad. She said she likes watching it like that. Probably hubby watches what he wants at bedtime on the TV in their room, lol...I'm guessing.

Anyway, I asked her about her BIL's mom and she's still with Scientology and lives in a room in their headquarters in southern CA. Somewhere.

She became a Scientologist when she divorced Joe's dad. He was 13 at the time and that's when he became estranged from his mom.

Daughter said she gave all her money to them but doesn't have any now so must be working for her keep.

I'd think she could just watch it for free on her iPad by signing in with her cable/satellite account, without paying extra. The financial aspect of the church really flabbergasted me. I'm disgusted that they would fleece people like that, with no regard for how they will survive, or for the deleterious effect of crushing debt on the lives of their so called parishioners. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I hope by sharing her story, Leah Remini is able to bring some enlightenment to those with loved ones in the church, so they will understand just how enmeshed members become into that train of thought and lifestyle.

Ill have to ask her why she doesn't do that...I know she's binge watching 7 seasons of "shameless".

I think that's what's it's called and I think she said 7 seasons....I must tune out some when she calls me. :)

I don't get cults, maybe you have to have a certain mindset to begin with...as a child though she really didn't have too much choice I guess but Joe didn't follow his mom. He lived with his dad some and I know some years he lived with a friend of the family.

I don't even understand the appeal of Scientology ...at least when you're first in it.

Edit: forgot to add that I don't read romance novels anymore, maybe cause I can't relate.

I have been hearing about a genre called Steampunk for awhile now, but the word steampunk was a deterant for me. I finally decided to look into it, and I just finished my first book of this style. Have any of you read "The Tinker's Daughter", by Jamie Sedgwick? I found it to be very interesting. He used no cursing, sexual scenes, nor did he go into to much detailed bloody gore, and it still captured my attention.

I'm thinking of trying another steampunk book. Any suggestions?

I know what steampunk is in fashion, I'm guessing it's science fiction history in reading but don't know. I do like the steampunk look though and if I was young I'd wear it.

I haven't read any of this subgenre, but did a search for free e-books and found a few.
As usual, you get one in the series free then the rest cost.
Hope you find one you like.

You are right @Tim Burr, the first was free and it is part of a trilogy, but I picked the other two up for only $2.99.

@Chrissy Page, I too like the style of clothing. I too thought it was just clothes, but there is Steampunk art as well, which has a lot of pipes, clocks, and gears in it. Now I wonder if there is a form of Steampunk music? Not to sure what that might sound like, but I did like my first book.

Wow, listening to the music above, I think they might have something there. I don't know who all the singers are, but I do like the style. It sort of reminds me of music I heard in some of the old musicals I use to see on TV as a child, or even a broadway play.

Speaking of steampunk, there's a lot of steampunk jewelry on Etsy.

I just finished reading a really cute book. It's called Rosemary's Gravy, and it's by Melissa F. Miller. It's a We Three Sisters Mystery, and is book 1 in the series. I really enjoyed it, so I'll probably check out the others. This one is currently free on Amazon, so if anyone's interested, check it out.
