@Ike Willis , your story this morning reminded me of the time back in the late 50's, when my father built a large house on the land we were farming. I was his helper, and it made me proud to even be a small part of making a home for our family. Every Saturday morning we headed for the local dump in the old pickup pulling a long trailer. My father would cull through the piles of discarded lumber, plumbing, and anything else he might be able to incorporate into the home. Back then the dumps weren't full of everday trash, it was mostly stuff from building contractors, or local stores. Out in the country most folks would burn their trash, so it wasn't like we had too dig through piles of stinky rotting trash. Once we even went home with over a 100 pairs of brand new shoes. My parents called every member of my father's church, so they could come and get whatever they wanted. I spent many hours pulling nails out of boards, and then straightening them for reuse with a small ballpeen (?) hammer. I also got the job of removing the old broken shards of glass from the windows so that my father could put new glass in them. As you can imaging it didn't take me long to "borrow" my brother's gloves. It ended up a large four bedroom house with really tall ceilings. They just:: don't build houses of solid wood anymore, now they are full of sheetrock. A few years after my father sold the home, someone moved it from the old farm site into town, and made it into duplexes. Today people seem to have lost the ability and skills that our parents, and even many of us used to provide for our families. PS: Ike keep the stories coming. I gotten to where I look forward to reading your posts each morning.
Good morning all. Off to a remembrance service today to pay tribute all our valiant war heroes. God bless them.
Mornin'. Another brisk morning under clear skies, here in the land of corn and bacon. It's 34 degrees and my furnace just went on. The heat feels good. I loved Ina I. Wonder's story about helping build her dad's house. We share some of the same things. I was about 10 when my dad started building his house. I remember one Saturday, dad was working on the framing. An uncle from a city upriver from my town came by to see how dad was doing. This uncle was a building contractor. Well, uncle started telling dad where he could save money. Use fewer 2x4's on the corners and space them farther apart, etc. Dad told uncle he wasn't building this house to sell, he was building it to live in. The house is still solid as ever. One of my daughter's owns it now. Prowling around old dump sites can be profitable. I used to pull all the aluminum out I could find. Old lawn chairs, storm doors and windows, aluminum cooking pots, car parts etc. When I accumulated a good pile I would sell it at a local junk yard. One Saturday morning, my oldest son was home on leave from the army. He wanted to party a bit before he went back. I was near broke, but had a huge pile of scrap aluminum. We sold it, picked up a brother-in-law and headed for a farm town across the river with nearly $100 in my jeans. This was in the 1970's. We came home much later, near broke and out of gas. Needless to say, my wifey was furious. An uncle of mine used to pull old power mowers from the dumps. Some he used for parts, others he got running and sold. Dumps used to be fun places. Have a great day, y'all.
@Ike Willis You're right Ike, one man's junk is another man's treasure Must be just wonderful to build yer own house, what an achievement I found some cereal bowls, I bet when I get to the shop to collect, they will be tiny, they were last time, even though they looked right wish they would put dimensions on site ............ All Xx
I find a lot of advertisements deliberately deceptive these days. I was just having this conversation with a friend the other day, about how deceptive companies are these days, with all the small print and getting us to sign up for contracts, then getting screwed over in the process because there are always hidden costs. I hope the bowls work out for you. Good Morning, Y'all. Happy Sunday. Yesterday was a lost day, I was in bed sick most of the day. When I was a child, we'd use Vicks on our chests when we had congestion, and I recently read that putting it in your ears can help with ear pain/infections, so I've got it in my ears and also up my nose right now. I think the congestion's breaking up, or at least I hope so. Honey in the tea's helping a little, too. Hope everyone has a great day.
@Diane Lane - I agree, I think that they want you to order and hope you won't send back Hope you feel better very soon x
Dan Haggerty, did I get it right? I didn't even have to google, Grizzly Adams, what a hunk-meister, LOL!!
LOL, yes, he/she is a cutie @Patsy Faye and you know how sometimes you'll have a pretty, vivid dream, but not remember it right away? Well, I dreamed I was in some sort of huge building, with an elevator. It was like a business of some sort but no clue to what, or why I was there. My grandmother was in it. There was a bird loose, a little like a dove, only colored. It was starving and kept trying to eat plants (it was a fat lil feller though??) and it was thirsty, so I'm carrying him around, trying to find water. And I am going to take him home and feed him good birdy food. But a couple of times I lose him in the crowd. Then I find him again. Anyway, I remember right at first when I saw him, I was afraid he'd bit me if I tried to pick him up, but I just put my hand down so he could step onto it, and he did, then I held him close, he was a snuggler. I need a pet
I do dance still Patsy I have a gym membership, and when I joined I asked if I could use their aerobics room if there were not classes. They said sure, and it's all private and closed off and one end of the building. Nice stereo system, so I loaded up my fave dance tunes, onto my phone, and I just plug my phone into the system down there, and dance to my hearts content. It feels so good, and I have done it in about 2 weeks now. Need to drag my lazy self down there
So good Denise, I wish I could dance again, really miss it It may sound daft but it lifted my spirits so much, the joy of music is so uplifting You keep dancing me darlin'
