@Ike Willis, you had me wondering about my knowledge this country. I even looked at my map to make sure places hadn't move around on me. You keep mentioning the East coast of Iowa. Were you a captain of a barge on Lake Michigan? My father was the oldest of 13 children, he and 8 brothers were fishermen on the West coast, and the Gulf of Mexico. Your way of speaking reminds me of them.
@Ike Willis , you're not sure if their camp in particular was targeted by the gov't? Maybe it's still there? Do you know how to get there? It would be interesting to do a genealogy search on your 2 great uncles and the seven sibs. I mentioned in the mincemeat pie thread that my grandmother owned a hunting lodge in NY. I wanted a pic of it before it burned down (she had sold it and the buyer burned it down). I had visited her there as a young child. So, a couple of nights ago, after remembering her mincemeat pie, I googled the name of the hotel but didn't google her name with it. There was a picture postcard of it. I clicked on the pic and you wouldn't believe what came up….Her name as the owner and a notice that Metropolitan Life of NY had posted unclaimed property of a matured policy in 2009. I sent the info to my sisters and one of them is looking into it. If it's true, then she probably listed my father as the beneficiary but he also passed away. Anyway, good morning everyone.
Sad, Lara, that the new owner made mincemeat out of your Grandmother's cabin! That postcard was a real find!
Good morning Ina. When I speak of my town as being on the East coast of Iowa, it's because the Mississippi River is Iowa's East boundary. I spent much time on the river fishing and hunting.
Good morning lara. There was 5 great uncles and two sisters, one of which was my grandmother. Their cabin, along with several others, was in an area that became designated as a wildlife refuge. I hunted this area until 1995. Hunting and fishing in season is still permitted. I hunted this area until 1995 when medical problems prevented me from roaming around much. By then all the cabins were gone.
Good Morning, Everyone, Happy Saturday! I'm a bit late, as usual, and it's 12:15 p.m. I was busy with neighborhood business, marketing, and making my cheese, finally. It's a gorgeous day here. It's still a little too warm to open the windows for long, but hopefully soon I'll be able to do that. I'm enjoying reading the posts in here. Have a great day all!
@Diane Lane, sounds like you're having a great day. Making cheese. I use to do that when I had young women in my family to gather and make a day of it. Everybody went home with a share of the days work. Hope you have some help. For me to make anything is a waste. I end up throwing most of it away, and I don't know enough people to give the food to. So I'm turning green with envy. Enjoy your day, and don't nibble too much.
No, no help. I could share with neighbors, but to be honest, I don't think they appreciate things like that. I just made up a big pot of rigatoni and cooked up the ground beef and tomato sauce, put 2/3 of the ricotta in with it, and will use the rest in crepes. What kind of cheese did you make? The ricotta is easy enough, so I figured I'd start with that, and then try others if I want. Just cleaned up the kitchen. Neighbors are bickering about drug use (half think it's o.k., others don't, guess which ones use and let their kids use)...sometimes so called adults really get on my nerves. I also gave a little of the ricotta to Kelly, my kitty who loved people food, she gobbled it up. I'm thinking about mixing chopped pineapple in with the ricotta for the crepes. This will be my food for the week, pretty much, I prefer to cook in large batches and then rest.
@Diane Lane, We would get toghther and make mozzarella cheese. I learned from my husband's gramdmother, who was from Italy. I was about sixteen when I learned. Not many people are willing to go through the process anymore, and it's not hard at all. I looked and you can even find free videos online. The young in my family don't even want to know where their food comes from.
I was looking at recipes for mozzarella the other day. It requires a couple of things I don't have, but will get, and then I'll make some of that. I think a lot of young people these days are very one dimensional and shallow. I know there are some who aren't, but they don't seem to be in my family. I loved watching my parents make their own bread, pasta, etc., but I don't think they ever made cheese. I can't imagine not wanting to try making something. I just wish I had more money for ingredients and tools, and a bigger kitchen .
Thank you. Good morning to everyone, as well. It was a rush to prepare for church. Tor the drive there is 45 mins. It's expected 27 degree Celcius today. Quite warm on a Spring day. I'm always thankful for the peace and security we live in. And I pray for our Jewish brothers and sisters and friends in Israel and all over the world. In church now just finishing up this post.
Good morning. I got about half the truck unloaded, the strawberrys moved and started tilling one of the beds so my wife can plant her tulip bulbs but the tiller quit running. I'll try to get it running again this morning, the fill the beds I moved the strawberrys from with compost.
