@Cody Fousnaugh, that's a pretty nice comment, hahahaaah. That lifestyle of eating what you want is the life most people dream. As what my husband would always say, let's enjoy life and as long as we do not indulge in anthing destructive (to our body) then it is all right as long as you do it moderately - that goes with food, activities, lifestyle. But speaking of weight gain, that seems to be the problem of the majority so maybe we can live with that.

A few years ago I was 240 lbs. and like a lot of others I was on that roller coaster loss 10 lbs. and gain 20 lbs. I went on all kinds of different diets they all work so so and then the munches would set in and I would say I am only eating a little. After I became knowledgeable on what caused it I stay away from the foods that were destroying my digestion system [gluten] and also foods that were unhealthy [oils processed meats] and then the weight just fell off I found myself eating less because I was full and did not want more. I was still enjoying things like ice cream but the weight kept dropping until I reached 170 lbs. and then it stopped. My diet regulates itself and I do not exercise.

I need to lose some weight. I thought about going back on NutriSystem but instead I'll just go on a low-calorie diet for a while, beginning with twenty-four hours of fasting and a few days of a liquid diet. That seems to be the equivalent of pressing a reset button, allowing pretty much any reasonable diet to be effective for a while. I can usually get 20-40 pounds off, but I can't seem to get back to what I weighed up until the age of forty. Still, I can get some weight off and, if things go as usual, I can hold it there for a year or so before gradually building up again.

I lost 70lbs without a diet or exercise. It was so natural it even suprized me.

    Overweight made easy to understand.

If your body needs to get oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide to will be forced to breathe. You can prevent this by holding your breath but in time you will fail. Even if you are under water and know if you breathe it will cause your death but your body will force you to still breathe.

If your body was running low on water it would cause you to drink even if what you were going to drink was unhealthy. This can be seen by alkaline [poison] water holes where you see dead animals or sailor who drink salt water trying to survive and they know but can’t resist drinking.

If your body needs rest it will cause you to go to sleep. This will happen even when you don’t want to like a driver falling asleep behind the wheel of a car. You can fight it or take drugs but n time you will lose. If you try and stop any of these things the end result is death. Your body will do anything to get what it needs

These are easily accepted and understood but when it comes to overweight people think it is different, because that what they have been told.

When your body gets mineral deficient the body will force you to get them usually by eating and you will be driven by hunger until the body gets what it needs. This is known by the people selling foods like Lays potato chips saying I bet you can’t just eat one.

In the veterinarian medicine they know when a cow, horse or other animals starts eating none food things they give them a salt block [mineral block] and the problem goes away. A pregnant woman finds herself having cravings because the child inside is using up all the minerals so the body has to replace them. There is a disease called pica doctor say it is rare but I say no. Pica see people eating none foods like light bulbs or the stuff in the kitty litter or licking paint off the walls. If there were eating potato chips or French fries, ect. They would not call it pica but it really is.
So what your body is craving is nutrition and the foods we eat do not have it or we are not absorbing it because of a digestive problem like gluten intolerance.
When you get the right nutrition your hunger will disappear and losing weight will happen naturally
Linus Pauling two times Nobel Prize winner said you could trace every disease and every ailment to a mineral deficiency.

@Ken Anderson Your experience history is similar to the way mine played out, but being older than you, I suspect I have lost more muscle mass and replaced it with fat tissue. Muscle tissue weighs more than fat tissue. I can truthfully say my body weight today, (I will be 74 soon), is the same as it was when I was 20, 160-165 lbs. But, as a young man I had little fat tissue.

My weight-reduction philosophy is rather simple. Get a narrow full-length mirror, if you do not already have one, perhaps mount it on a closet door in your bedroom. When you feel you ought to lose some weight, check your reflection in that mirror. IT will tell you far more than your scales, which for me, are practically useless. If you feel your reflection says "suitable", don't bother with dieting. If it's not what you might think as being worthwhile-appearing, watch the food intake for a couple of weeks. Another good check is the "belt buckle" location.

Of course, the mirror-method is only adequately useful if it is performed naked!

I'm picking up again on this "Dieting Any One" to continue conversations about dieting and about weekly weigh-ins to help keep up with my diet and have anyone who wants to join in on this dieting and weight loss effort.

I'm picking up again on this August 11, 2017: Okay, I started my diet again last night. I weighed in at 188 pounds and I'm hoping to lose fifteen pounds (really need to lose 30 # but I'd rather do it in small doses). I've had my evening meal and day is done. I consumed 978 calories to day. I'm going to weigh in in the morning (Saturday) and try to weigh in once a week on a Saturday morning and I'm hoping to see my pounds slowly slip away. Everyone's welcome.

Bill, IMO, determination is the most important thing, and you sound full of determination! My concern about reduced calorie eating is, always has been, insufficient protein. We have several organs working constantly, to keep us alive aside from all other issues. Most important are the Heart muscle, and the Diaphragm muscles, which draw air in and out of the lungs. Both of those muscles need energy, as well as sufficient protein. Good protein quantity seems to always go hand-in-hand with high calories, so one must be careful. Moderately active adults need about 60 grams of protein daily. Problem is, prots can't be stored in the body. Here is where the multiple tiny-meal daily idea gains merit. Eat 4 helpings of 15 g of protein each day, and be assured the body doesn't "rob" the required deficit from the unused muscles. It WILL do that, to successfully feed the heart and diaphragm.

Prots go hand in hand with fats, unfortunately. High prot foods are invariably meats, whether red meat, poultry, fish, bacon. Fish have fats beneficial to the heart, "Omega 3 & 4", but red meat lacks them. Poultry is probably better than red meats (beef), but has been implicated in reported "doctoring" with hormones.

Beans are fairly high in prots, but lack 1 of the 8 or so necessary prots, unfortunately. Eggs are good for prots, especially the whites.

One word of warning regarding meats: almost all "lunch meats", sausage, ham, "turkey breast", Spam, Treet, a whole host of others contain preservatives, which almost invariable include Sodium Nitrite. Nitrites are handled by our livers by turning them into Nitrosamines, which are proven Carcinogens. Recently, we've found lunch meats of various kinds labeled "no preservatives", and we buy those exclusively.

Bacon is generally bad news. Though, some is available w/o nitrates. Eaten in a restaurant, nitrites are guaranteed.

IMO, best bang for the buck prot-wise is canned tuna and salmon. Just my 2 cents..............Frank

It's almost six am Saturday morning here in Oklahoma's central daylight time zone. I have been up since four am. Checked the news to see that the world had not blown itself up or any other disasters in play. Read over Frank's comments above about proteins. I had made a list the other day for my wife to pick up a few proteins which included these items if not available here at home, in preparation for starting a diet. The list includes eggs, nuts, chicken breasts, oats, cottage cheese, milk, lean beef, broccoli, fish, lentils, Brussel sprouts, and shrimp. I weighed a few minutes ago: 187.0 pounds. Nothing to write home about but only started this adventure a couple days ago. I'm down one pound so I'm headed in the right direction, but a long way to go. Hope a good weekend is in store for all reading this. Cheers.

Fat is stored energy so my problem for being over weight was the fault of Canada they kept saying conserve energy. Ha Ha Now I am not living in Canada I lost the weight. Dieting seem to be very difficult if you cannot control the erg to eat and that is linked to mineral deficiencies certain minerals if they are missing the body craves them and drives the body to eat.

It is quite amusing when you look at the medical system and their ignorance for example if you look up the illness pica you will find it called a mental disorder caused by a mineral deficiency. This disorder is when a person has an overwhelming erg to eat things considered non food like paint, dirt, and feces. There are a few minerals that will cause this but normally they say iron deficiency. If a person had an erg to eat other things like foods they do not call it pica and what is the difference is one is socially excepted and the other is not and yet it is the same illness they just missed the mark.

Saturday morning I awoke with leg cramps, thirsty, and a little bit hungry. Also needed to empty my bladder. My will power has been sorely tested this week as I have made a real effort to lose a pound or two. Of course I realize if this turns into misery it is of my own making. I stepped on the scales a few minutes ago. My daily average calorie intake this week has been a substantial 1065.1, so that's not starving one's self, even if it feels like you are. This morning I weighed 182.4.That's a 5.6 pound lose this week. This is too much, too fast to sustain but I wanted to break into the 170s before dragging this out too long. This is too much weight lose to sustain but I wanted to make a showing. Tomorrow is my DIL's birthday and we are going to the Outback Restaurant to celebrate (her choice). I'm going to let my hair down and have a substantial meal and hope to make up for doing so in the coming days. I have denied myself this week. Example: My wife made a great looking banana pudding this week; I didn't eat one bite even even though my mouth watered as I looked at those vanilla wafers atop the pudding and ringing the bowl. What the heck! A guy should test his resolve every once in a while.

Are you getting enough calcium and magnesium, @Bill Boggs ? Lack of either one of those minerals can sometimes cause leg cramps.
I don't like to go to sleep on either a full stomach or on an empty stomach; so I try to eat dinner earlier, and then just have a small healthy snack at bedtime.
Sometimes, I have cottage cheese, which is one of the slowest digesting foods; so it helps me to feel satisfied all night, plus it has lots of vitamins and minerals to help me sleep better. Other times, I have some homemade almond milk with a scoop of whey protein powder in it.
I just can't sleep if my tummy is rumbling and hungry, and this little bedtime snack seems to alleviate this for me.
