I wasn't sure if this should go under shopping. However, I need a new office type chair for the computer. This cheap one I bought years ago has had it. I looked at one I really liked at the office store some time back but was afraid I couldn't put the thing together. But now I really do need a new one.

The one I have has no arm rests which is fine and was very easy to put together. But it's also really cheap-y. Of coarse at the office store they will take it out to your car in the box but once I get it home, I'm on my own. I can bring it in piece by piece if it's too heavy but then I have to put it together. And that's what I'm really afraid of.

I'm not DIY. The most complex thing I've ever done is change a dead bolt. I know this is easy to some. But have other not so good at DIY projects put one of these chairs together before. Thank you.

Sometimes stores have contracts with people that will go to your house and put it together but it's usually very expensive.

My daughter was thinking of a trampoline one Christmas and asked how much Toys r us would do it for and it was almost as much as the trampoline.

If you're on a neighborhood app, ask around. Someone will offer...maybe even for free.

I am pretty wussy when it comes to putting things together that I buy, but I haven't had much trouble putting office chairs together. They are usually pretty easy. I haven't been very happy with the last couple of chairs that I've had though. I once had a very large office chair that I wish I had now. I don't lean back on the backrest anyhow, and that larger chair allowed one of my older cats to curl up behind, as she likes to do. She still insists on it sometimes, although on my current chair it means that I have to sit on the very edge of the chair, which isn't comfortable.

Kate - I presume the chair would be delivered for you and it 'should' be easy to find someone to fit this together for
you. I use google first - take a look ........
Even at the store where you buy it, they may suggest someone for you :)

Another thought - we have organisations over here that help people on their own with any job that needs doing
They have volunteers at hand, why not look them up

Yes I've put them together a few times...they're straightforward enough to do..you just gotta make sure you tighten all the screws up properly... lay it on it's side to put it all together it's so much easier...

I always get an ''executive'' style chair with arms because it helps me get up when my back is playing up...also it's important for me to have swivel, and lumber support as well as reclining facility...

I always get leather or faux leather, I find cloth can be abrasive on my legs if I wear shorts and also leather is much easier to clean.

I do know there are companies online who will deliver the chair already assembled ...just depends on how much you want to pay... It does add a lot to the price, so if you can possibly do it yourself you'll save a bunch of money

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to go back to the place who had the chair I liked. Maybe they don't carry it anymore, but I'll look. We do have an office store that sells more upscale. They deliver. Would cost much more. I'll look into putting one together if I can.

One computer chair we bought some time ago, Office Depot put it together for us and, luckily, the manager didn't charge us. We have a Dodge Durango SUV and was able to fit it in the back fine.

The two computer chairs we have now, I decided to put together myself, so we wouldn't have to pay any extra costs. Both were on sale. We have a 2-wheeler that we used to bring the box into our apartment. I put both chairs together, at different times, and it was sort of a "pain-in-the-butt", but I got it done. Told my wife, who was at work when I put them together, "ok, you owe me a steak dinner for this". She said "no problem".

In fact, I put together both of our computer tables.

Boring update: Went to the office store and they seemed to have a much smaller selection. Maybe people are buying online more. Not sure. I went to the more upscale office place. I expected higher prices but I thought I could find something for under or around 200. No chance. They had a couple of clearance floor models I didn't like. After that is was well over 300 and upwards to 800. What the? I'd prefer not to shop online for this because I want to try them in the store, but I think that's where I'm headed. Either direct delivery or a site to store.

The problem with the less expensive office chairs, I think, is that after a year or two, or three, the screws won't stay tight anymore. That life can be extended by periodically checking the screws, and tightening them when needed. Of course, I've never bought one of the expensive office chairs so they might not be any better, for all I know.

@Kitty Carmel , I wouldn't buy one without trying it out in the store. I saw some online that sounded good. I went to Office Depot and tried them. The one I thought about buying slanted toward the front so badly that I would have slid out of it. I couldn't tell that online.

I think you might be right. I'm going to go back to the regular office supply store and see what they have again. Also I'll ask if they seemed to have less of selection since it was back to school and I live in a college town. A slanting forward chair would bother me also.

@Ken Anderson The chair I have is about 8 years old. But the seat doesn't go up and down anymore and honestly it's never been comfortable. It has a contour seat and I definitely don't want one of those again. I'm surprised this cheap thing has lasted this long.

The mass problem with buying anything in a box, much less an office chair, is that you absolutely must put it together.
I say MUST because even if it seems too difficult there is no way anyone, set aside the Chinese, who can put it back in the box in order to return it.
The parts all came in the box and possibly even an extra bolt or screw but as of yet, I have found no one who can put all the parts back without making the box bulge and without using a roll of duct tape.

Even if all the pictures in the directions are in Chinese, consult with your medicine cabinet for something soothing because taking it back is even more stressful.
