I think that with all the technology available, we are long overdue for "Smell-O-Vision!" We have just about everything else but that is being over looked by Sony, Samsung and all the rest of the majors. Wouldn't it be great to watch a cooking show, for example, and be able to smell what the great chefs are creating? Or watching a movie that is taking part in the ocean and actually smell the ocean itself?
Of course a "mute" button would be in order for those smells we don't enjoy or for us dieters, but I do think this is an oversight!

Yeah, I can think of a scene or two in "Dreamcatcher" that I'd probably rather not smell.

I'm not sure I'd like that. It would just make me feel hungry. Now what I'd really like is to be able to taste what's being prepared on those cooking shows, especially when it comes to a show like Masterchef, where I'm sure that some of the food is a lot better than anything I've tasted in my life.

I am sure that taste-o-vision would be even better! LOL, imagine calling for service? "Hello, the strawberry cheesecake is tasting like tuna salad!"

I have a very sensitive noise and smell things most people do not smell, I think I will pass on the Smell-O-Vision.

Remember back when....I remember my parents talking about Smell o vision being on the horizon as the next biggest invention. I also remember my father telling me that technology was going to leapfrog over itself in its haste to outdo itself. I asked him what he meant, and he said watch the technology fields and if I ever was lucky enough to invest, do it, because technology would take over the world. If I ever wanted to know what was going to be the next invention, he said, read sci-fi. Those writers seemed to be prescient.....

I don't think I'd even use Smell-O-Vision for anything, because the only things worth smelling on TV are cooking shows, and they're usually late at night, and I would just get hungry from the nice smell of food and find myself raiding the fridge and getting fat.

Actually, Smell o Vision debuted in 1960, in the movie theater. It seems to have been a mechanical process, that wouldn't translate to TV.

"Smell-O-Vision was a system that released odor during the projection of a film so that the viewer could "smell" what was happening in the movie. The technique was created by Hans Laube and made its only appearance in the 1960 film Scent of Mystery, produced by Mike Todd, Jr., son of film producer Mike Todd. The process injected 30 odors into a movie theater's seats when triggered by the film's soundtrack".

This thread reminds me of a true story, from the pages of "This is your life, Ike Willis".

Being brought up as a catholic kid and going through the catholic school system meant I logged lots of church time. From first grade through eighth grade it was mass every morning except Saturdays, religion classes five days a week, novena services every Friday afternoon and more church on Sunday. As a kid, I once joked about changing my mailing address to our church. That earned me a “shut up, less you want to go to hell when you die” from my mom.
So, I learned to amuse myself in different ways, while enduring the torture of being forced to sit on a hard bench listening to some old guy in a dress drone on and on. For example, on Sunday my family always occupied the last pew on the left at the back of the church. Another couple, with only one boy sat in front of us. The kid was near my age and had black, slicked down hair and black bug eyes, like a cockroach. For some reason, dad had a dislike for these people. On learning this, I hatched a plan.
I have always had the ability to fart almost whenever I wanted. All I had to do was eat breakfast before we went to church. Best yet, I mastered the art of the silent fart. So, one fine Sunday morning, I put my plan into action. As soon as this couple and the cockroach kid arrived, I starting farting, in complete silence. It worked like a charm. As soon as we got in the car to go home dad started his comments.
“Did you smell that stinking jerk sitting ahead of us? What the h**l he been eating”? I could barely conceal my laughter.
It went that way every Sunday as soon as this family arrived. My parents blamed that family and I never did tell them otherwise.

I was at a theater and they did that and for the life of me I cant remember what movie it was....it wasnt that long ago either.

They do that with a ride at Disneyland called "Soaring"....when you are flying over the orange groves you smell oranges in the air....my favorite ride!

:oops:Definitely it would be nice to have smell-o-vision when you're watching chefs create their specialties on television! I'd love to have smell-o-vision in my television if it's not too expensive to have. Smell-o-vision would make watching television more fun! One thing though I'd prefer to have the option to have smell-o-vision on or off button on my television.
