I'm about 80% done with a shawlette I'm knitting and have decided I don't like the colors. Stripe with a dark grey and a variegated yarn with muted pinks/purples/oranges. I added a green stripe. I was doing fine with it and all of the sudden it seemed dreary to me.

I've put in on "hibernating" on Ravelry and if I finish it I'll have to force myself. I've already put a lot of stitches in it.

Now I found another pattern I want to do. Need two colors. Don't want to make the bad color choice again. The yarn I'm looking at I would need to order online and color choices are pretty good.

What color combinations do you like? I like pink and green but I don't think the pinks available in this yarn are bright enough. Now I'm looking at blue and green. No blue and yellow. Old high school colors.

@Holly Saunders Thank you very much for that link. I saved it to favorites. It's a treasure trove for people like me with no sense of good color combinations.

@Babs Hunt I was looking at green and yellow as a combo. I may be leaning to the blue and green but I'm still deciding.

Thank you both your input, it's helpful.

I think black and white always go well together.

Thanks kind of a cool idea. This pattern has two blocks of colors, not stripes. And then it adds a border of a contrasting color. Thank you for the idea!

I have always had a problem seeing black or white as a color...they are more a basic neutral shade that goes with everything...at least that's what all the fashionistas used to say. :p

I prefer Navy and cream to Black and white clothing. I think at this age it's less harsh looking against the skin...

Sometimes, when I am making something, I have an idea in my head of what exactly I want it to look like, and then choose the colors that will have that effect. For instance, if I am making a bathroom throw rug, and the bathroom is mostly a sea green, then I will use that color, and enhance it with other colors from the bathroom theme.
However, sometimes I am making something and I am just not sure what colors i would like. Sometimes, I just hold the yarn next to each other and see if that looks like the effect that I am going for; but if that doesn’t work, or I do not have the yarn, then I look at google images of the same kind of knitted item and see if something sparks from there.

This may be off-topic as you ladies are writing about fabric colors but speaking of colors in general, it very much depends on the object in question. Automobiles for example, I prefer "elegant" colors, a burgundy or royal blue although white or pearl is better in the Arizona heat. In houses, I prefer various shades of white with a bright contrasting trim. I like interiors in white or light colors.

I'm a guy. I only know the eight colors that came in the small box of crayons.
