Can there ever be peace on Earth? Has there ever been peace on Earth? I have been listening to Christmas music. One of the songs is: 1. I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet the words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to men. 2. I thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along th’unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men. 3. And in despair I bowed my head: “There is no peace on earth,” I said, “For hate is strong and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men.” 4. Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth he sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to men.” 5. Till, ringing, singing, on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, Of peace on earth, good will to men! “The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,” That in itself is contradictory. Who’s wrong, who’s right? Every group, religious or political, thinks they are right and everybody else is wrong. Christians believe that Jesus was born 2018 years ago to bring “Peace on Earth, good will toward men.” But, even among Christians, there is not peace and good will. I personally know three churches where dissension among the congregation has caused some of them to either go to another church or form a new church. If the love of Christ cannot bring peace among his followers, how much hope can there be for peace worldwide? I fear there is none. “For hate is strong and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men.” There is often not peace among families. There is hatred, jealousy and bitterness even among blood kin. One of my guests for dinner yesterday has many health problems, among them cancer. He knows he doesn’t have many days left. He has an old car that he is going to give to someone. It’s in good shape but it is an old car. It can’t be worth more than a few hundred dollars. Some of his children are not visiting him because they want the car and he has promised it to someone else. Their father is dying and they are arguing over an old car. If we can’t get along with our brothers and sisters, how can we ever get along with those who are so different from us? What would it take to achieve peace on Earth?
I don't think it can be achieved. Maybe some sort of very major disaster on the whole planet, and starting over again....with different rules!
Not in any near future. I've lost hope in humanity. I don't know if I have a lot of hope in myself. There are just too many problems big and small in this world.
Of course not. For a moment disregard the rest of the world. Take our own country. We seem to always be on the war path. We're unhappy unless we can war with some little country, kill off their armies, bring misery to their peoples. We've been doing that through out my lifetime in addition to fighting two world wars which one must consider just wars but we were sending our Marines to central America and else where, taking over lands and plantations, seeking rubber, oil and other goodies. Now if anyone else in the world finds this offensive, go for your gun but be careful. We are known gun slingers, short of fuse and ill tempered and handy with a gun. Don't forget. Don't tread on us. We will not long allow peace to reign. It makes us nervous. We're always ready to call someone out, prove we're the fasted, the best, always itching to mold the world to our liking, step aside, granny, you might get tobacca juice on you. We wear our guns low, tied down, anxious to use them, on anybody. Now what was the subject? Oh, yeah, peace on earth, subject matter for old ladies sipping tea and poets. No madam, I fear peace on earth is not even possible for the Almighty.
Long as there is money to be made by having wars we will have wars. If they could find a way of making money with peace we would have it
The song was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, during the Civil War, and after just losing his wife, and having his son wounded in the war. It was a very depressing time in his life. Here is the story and the song.
I honestly believe that if more women were ruling countries there could be peace. Women are of a more peaceful nature, they are not as likely as men to send their sons and daughters to war. Women are better able to sit and negotiate while men turn almost every disagreement into a challening pissin contest. Now all the guys here are gonna jump on me....I'm going to run and hide.
Those Christians who have read the Bible know that real Peace on earth will not come until Jesus Christ returns and takes His Kingdom back from satan, etc. destroys the old earth and makes a new one with Heaven as the New Jeruselum. There will real Peace only in our Eternal life according to the Bible. We do have "seasons" of peace here on earth...just like we have "glimpses" of what Heaven and our eternal life will be at times. But lasting Peace will only come with Eternity. Jesus has promised to fill each of those who accept Him as Savior with a Peace in their hearts that surpasses understanding...Christians can know this peace in their hearts even when their is no peace on earth.
The total elimination of hate, jealousy, anger, unforgiveness, resentment, bitterness, etc., etc. We are all just imperfect human beings living on this earth, there is no way we can achieve peace on earth all the time.
@Martin Alonzo Don't they say war is good for the economy? Sadly. @Babs Hunt I'm not a Christian but I believe Jesus existed and I believe in some of his teachings, not that I know all that much admittedly. We can only hope for this peace some day.
The Bible also says that an Antichrist ruler will come in the last days before Jesus returns to earth and that the Antichrist will make a seven year "Peace" pact. After 3 and a half years this Antichrist will go back on his word and break the Peace deal. Then the real "hell" on earth will begin. So there will be a false Peace on earth for three and half years according to the Christian Bible...but that's as close as many will get to Peace on earth.
I might be in the minority here, but I'm not sure my country is evil or starts wars just for monetary gain. If I believed we enjoy bringing misery and grief to people everywhere in the world, don't think I would have served as long as I did. Just seems the easy way out to blame all the worlds problems on United States aggression. Peace on Earth? It starts with the acts of the individual to make a difference.
