My reception is not good for news talk. I can get the local FOX station but the station I want to listen to is in San Francisco. About 3 hours from me, by car. Reception in the car is good and I could get them in clearly when I lived in a stand alone house.

I have researched online the C. Crane radios. They are not cheap. However I can find no definitive answer if they work better in an apartment and I have tried searching several times and looked at a number of we pages.

Anyone know anything about these? Or the best radio for AM within an apartment with I guess a lot of interference. Thanks in advance.

Many radio stations (and television stations) are now available online, and you can listen through your computer, @Kitty Carmel . My husband likes to listen to talk radio, and i think that he uses iHeartRadio to find the stations that he likes to listen to.
We have an iPad; but I am sure that the same thing would also work on a regular computer, it just might be more complicated to find the stations without the app to do it.
Anyway, it is worth a try, and then you do not have to worry about buying an expensive radio, or antenna, and can listen to any radio station , anywhere.

I resided in Illinois for quite a few years and now that I'm back in the UK, I still occasionally listen to Chitown radio stations via the internet

We used to get great reception with our C-Crane radio but, for some reason, radio reception has gotten worse here over the past few years and we now use Internet radio.

I was in Elgin for over 6 years, even though the locals couldn't seem to pronounce it right

I know where that is...had some friends there when we lived in McHenry County. I lived in Chicago and it's suburbs from 1970 to 1993.

I know Elgin wasn't in McHenry County...either Cook or Kane, can't remember but near Schaumburg.

A nice area back then...don't know now.

Listening to KGO Newstalk in San Francisco over the internet. It's working out great! So I guess forget about the radio for now. But thanks for your mention of the C Crane radio @Ken Anderson should I ever decide to look into one again in the future.

Elgin and Aurora were long ago distant suburbs of Chicago, before all the intervening areas became built-up. I believe Elgin was home to a large, "Mentally-challenged Hospital". At one time, a commuter railroad operated between Aurora-Elgin, and Chicago. My Dad, a life-long fan of railroading, spoke of it often. If I recall correctly, it was an electrically-operated railroad, like the Chicago Elevateds.

A bit of snooping found this:

    "Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad
The Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E), known colloquially as the "Roarin' Elgin" or the "Great Third Rail", was an interurban railroad that operated passenger and freight service on its line between Chicago and Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, and Elgin, Illinois."

CA&E public timetable dated February 2, 1936. The railroad ran enough service to fill most of a 12-page folder with train schedules.
