https://www.wthr.com/article/oregonians-are-now-allowed-to-pump-their-own-gas I had no idea the people in Oregon could not pump their own gas. Now that they have passed a law allowing them to do just that...people are complaining about it. And meanwhile New Jersey now becomes the only State that does not allow Self-Service at the pumps.
My sister lives in NJ so I was familar with not pumping your own gas. It was kind of weird when I was watching her kids once when she went on a cruise with her husband and I used her car and had to get gas.
There have been lots of times when I wished I could find Full Service Stations where I was but I had no idea there were actually States that had laws against pumping your own gas. It just seems to me to be a choice people should be able to make up their own minds about.
This is something that doesn't bother me either way. For the longest time gas stations pumped your gas and checked your oil and cleaned your windshield, that was nice. I wasn't thrilled at first at having to pump my own gas but got used to it, so either way...I'm good. If you could have a choice, they'd have to hire more people to pump gas so might be more expensive.
Many of the Citco stations around here will pump your gas for you, and their gas is no more expensive than the next station that makes you get out and pump your own, so I prefer that, especially in the winter. I guess they've done the math and decided that extra business they get from people not wanting to pump their own will pay for the salary of the guy who pumps it. They do get extra business because the one in Bangor is across the street from a self-service station, whose gas is the same price, and there never seems to be anyone at the self-service station.
do they check your oil and clean your windshield? If not, here in California there really is no reason not to pump your own gas, weather is never bad enough. Also, I'd feel the need to tip them so I'd rather do it myself. I would like to go back to the Full service gas stations that did everything but pumping my gas is really not that important.
Yes. They will routinely do the windows, back and front, and they'll ask if we want the oil checked. However, cars don't tend to go through the amount of oil they used to. It's been years since I have had a car that was ever low on oil. I don't know if that is an improvement in technology, or if it has to do with the fact that I am paying more than $30 for my cars now.
I used to have no problem pumping my own gas but then one time when I used the self-service pump somehow the gas spewed back out of the nozzle while it was still filling my tank and that back flow of gas ended up all over me. We were heading out of town and I had gas all over my clothes, etc. and even though I went in the Station's restroom and changed clothes and cleaned the gas off of me the best I could....there was no way I could get it all off. And I was afraid something would happen and I would catch on fire. We made it safely to our destination and I showered, etc. but after that I was to nervous to pump my own gas and my Honey or one of my children, etc. would always do it for me. Now that my Honey's vision has become so impaired he can not see the numbers or words on the gas pumps... and once I realized this I made myself start filling our car's gas tank again. The first few times I did it my anxiety levels were sky high...but I pushed past this and now even though I am cautious that I am doing everything correctly...I am okay with gassing up our car.
Yes that could happen if you aren't holding the nozzle and use that thingy to hold it in place, some don't work that well. If I have one that keeps stopping I just fill up holding the nozzle the whole time but I prefer to use that thingy so I can wash my front and rear window while gassing up.
I was holding the nozzle Chrissy and had been pumping my own gas for years with no problem when this happened out of the blue! There must have been some defect in the nozzle and pump I used...it was a station I had never been to before and would definitely never use again.
