Up until I was a teenager, some streets in Cicero, Illinois still looked like this:

Paved with bricks! Zillions of them. Such a street existed one block east of our house, which was situated in Berwyn (IL).

Anyone have recollection of brick paving? Frank

Yep we have lots of Brick paving in the UK...( a pavement here is your sidewalk'...) but yes may roads , pathways and driveways with brick paving, and always some will rise up, and be the cause of serious injury for those who trip and fall.

I saw a new way of laying brick paths and roads not so long ago, they lay the whole road now in sheets of bricks rather than individually....I'll go see if I can find it...

Yes. There is an area in the city called The Oregon District which has the paved brick roads that extend to some of the east side. I noticed some time ago that defunct railroad tracks passed through those areas and wondered if that was the reason for the brick roads. Maybe not it was just a passing thought.

I learned to slow down when going through that area because it is very unlevel. It's traveled over daily a lot even a diesel bus route goes through The District.

Seeing the brick road reminded me of the Martin Bomber Plant that was on Offutt AFB
where B-26 and B-29's were built.

The 12-acre factory floor was covered with 2"x4" creosote wood blocks.
( To prevent sparks if a metal tool was dropped on the floor ).

I had never seen so many wood blocks in my life.

I grew up on a brick-paved street in Pennsylvania. The curbs were stone and designed for carriages, so were too high for modern automobiles. They paved the "gutters" with asphalt to bring the height of the road up to being compatible with modern cars, thus making a very ugly combination of brick and asphalt. Eventually they paved everything with asphalt. The bricks had been there for over 100 years without being touched; now they have to repave every 6 or 7 years.

Frank, since you are from Berwyn, you must know Svengoolie!

Machine-tool shops in factories were commonly so paved, as was the one in the main plant of Victor Mfg. & Gasket Co., my first real employer.

@Don Alaska "Frank, since you are from Berwyn, you must know Svengoolie!"

Only very vaguely, as I left the Chicago area before he became very popular.

There are a couple of towns in Maine that have brick streets, usually in the old downtown historical districts.
