We need a new holiday. With the October, November and December holidays segueing seamlessly into each other these days, we could just celebrate HallowThanksMas. Just think how convenient it would be to send one card, put up only one set of decorations (we could have a roasted bat sitting on a platter wearing a Santa hat and angel witches bearing tiny pumpkin pies on top of the dead fir tree festooned with cranberry strings and ornaments made from bite-sized Snickers bars). We could sing songs like "Grandma Got Run Over by a Cinnamon-Scented Broomstick" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Tofurkey" and "All I Want for HallowThanksMas is a Sears Gift Certificate".
IMO we should go a step further, move all ten federal holidays to the first two weeks in July and take a national vacation.
Why not? The stores most certainly would agree since they start promoting the fall and winter holidays and celebrations sometime in late August and early September. By around the 1st of September, Walmart pulled the plants and swimming pools and replaced them with Halloween costumes, turkey roasters and Christmas decorations.
Am I the only one that wants Christmas all year?? Actually Thanksgiving for 3 months and 9 months for Christmas....don't care about any other holidays. Seems a happy switch goes on in my brain around the end of October and lasts until about April...after that, it's all downhill for me. The icing on my cake would be SNOW!
My switch must be busted. I always manage to catch the Christmas spirit at the last minute like Ebeneezer Scrooge. I enjoy the snow and I miss the hustle and bustle of shopping along main street in the old department stores the malls and big box stores just don't give me the same holiday thrill.
I agree about the department stores on Main Street ...do miss those but I don't even have to leave my house...I'm just happy this time of year.
The Christmases of my youth were in Pittsburgh. I know we talked a little differently ....like saying yinz but not this different, lol. I remember the window decorations at Gimbels, Kaufmans and Joseph Hornes...those were the big 3 dept stores downtown.
Holidays mathematically. Ok if you work 8 hours a day that means you work 1/3 of a day or 1/3 of a year 365 divided by 3 equals 122 days. Now if you do not work week ends that is 52 weeks times two [Saturday and Sunday] that is 104 days a year. Take the 122 days you work less week ends leaves you with 122 – 104 which is 18 days. Now if you take away 14 day vacation your down to 4 days and if you get Christmas, New Year, Easter, and Labor day off. I guess you did not work last year
I could not afford Christmas all year long. But I think the Spirit of Christmas with others being more loving, giving, and helpful to each other is something that would be wonderful all year long.
I have lived in OK eight years. Just before we moved I lost the Chiristmas spirit; never found it. Now we don't decorate, no tree, no do-dddy on the door, no Christmas cards on the mantle. Nothing. We give the grand kids money. Last Christmas I gave my wife a check for a thousand dollars. She tore it up, saying our bank account couldn't afford such a extravagant gift.
@Bill Boggs Her torn up check was her gift to you! Reminds me of the guy who insisted that when he died, his wife should place a thousand dollars in his suit pocket. She did.....she wrote him a check!
