I don't watch those shows much, @Holly Saunders as, while some of that reflects reality, a lot of it is staged. Life in the real Bush is a struggle to survive much of the time, and quite boring. It doesn't make for good TV, so they spice it up, some of the shows being a complete fraud. I'm not familiar with the shows you mentioned, so I don't know if they are credible or not. Film crews also have trouble dealing with the remoteness of no restaurants, stores, cell phone coverage, or TV in most places. Mnay of the people acting in the shows don't live here year-round either.

I remember it getting down to -30 sometimes in north Idaho, but that was about as cold as it ever got, and it usually didn’t last over a few days, or a week at the most. You are correct, @Don Alaska , that once it is that cold, it is very hard to breathe the air. Unfortunately, that is when you have to sometimes be outside because of extra things needing to be done because it is that cold.
One of the winter tasks was piling up a snow berm all around the house in the winter, as extra insulation from the cold getting under the house (where all of the water pipes were at), but you had to wait until there was plenty of snow, and it was not going to just melt again.
I used to help my dad doing that when I was a kid, and we would just take the snow shovels and both start working our way around the outside of the house, until we met each other on the other side somewhere. I am sure that my dad got a lot more of the snow berm piled up than I did, but at least I was helping him, and I enjoyed that.

When I lived alone in Bonners Ferry at the trailer, I put bales of straw all around the base of the trailer, and that made a good insulation, and later, I could just pile the snow on top of the straw bales, so it went even higher up the side of the trailer.

Since we don't have livestock any longer, things are a bit easier. Keeping the animals as comfortable as possible was always a 24-hour a day chore in the winter, especially should one decide to go into labor during a cold spell. I think I told the story of the winter that we had three families under our roof, temps of -40 or below for over two weeks, and 22 or so baby goats in the heated garage. We had to carry each of the goats one by one out to the barn to nurse on the mom, and carry them back into the heat. We always tried to avoid kidding in winter, but sometimes the buck would manage to get in with the girls.... That was one of those years.

We should probably move this to its own thread, @Holly Saunders. The Kilchers are okay people, I guess, but they are not remote and suffer no more than farmers in many other areas of the country. Homer is a "Hippie Mecca" where many are on welfare and smoke a lot of the dope they grow themselves. I think when Atz started the homestead, it was primitive, but it is no longer so. Helicopters can not be involved in any phase of hunting here, and if you fly in anywhere in a plane, you cannot hunt for anything within 24 hours of your flight.

    Afternoon all...

It' a kind of grey but mild day here today.. another parcel arrived this morning. The postman has knocked the door with parcels every day this week, I didn't even know there had been so many things ordered.. but I think that might be the last of it for a while.

I got a little 3 inch presentation urn to put some of our labradoodles' ashes into and we can keep in the house ( it's the same colouring as he was brown and gold) , and then we can take the big urn in the barn and bury the rest of his ashes in the garden, and possibly spread some over places he used to love to run before he was taken to Spain with my daughter..

This morning I had to set up a whole new internet provider.. , we were having so many problems with the last one, so now hopefully everything will run smoothly again ..also this morning I got a delivery of some dark chocolate from Switzerland so I'm happy about that ... :D..I've already tried some...

have a good day folks.... whatever you're doing today...

I have spent most of today sorting out stuff for our trip to Thailand next Week, there always seems lots to sort out for these trips, car hire, places to stay and insurance etc.

I came a sweet little video of a squirrel being fed nuts on Facebook so I downloaded it.

Talking about FB, my daughter Cathy uploaded some photos she took of her day with animals, horse, dog and cat.
