As is often stated (because it is true), if gun ownership is outlawed then only the outlaws will own guns. Wouldn't that be a happy mess?

And don't get me started on the anti-gun big mouths who have armed body guards, the anti-wall loud mouths who live in gated compounds, etc. We "common folk" are not entitled to the same protections I suppose.

Oh Ken, I'm glad only 12 died and not 24 or more.

These mass killings are now a way of our lives it seems, since I hear there are like 300M guns out there. I've got to "get it"..and I have a hard time grasping it all. I was just born too long ago to change now and fall in love with guns. Thanks all.

I guess my lucky stars have had me living for almost 81 yrs in areas that we didn't need to be armed.

And I don't recall any of the anti gun proponents talking about Outlawing all guns!!!! It's way way way too late for that.

I just hope when I am 81 I will still have my health to attend our pistol matches and church monthly matches, after being brought up all my life around firearms as a competitive shooter, quite awhile I was shooting 2 matches a week and most all my life friends also have been involved in that both male and female, not for all but for me a huge good part of my live. Over half of the travels in my entire life have been to shooting events all over. I sure am glad I had the chance to do this and led a clean life to allow it not told as some places that it is not allowed, I do enjoy our freedom to choose.

Oh I hope you can go forever and YES I love our Freedom of Choice. Maybe if I were born and reared in Texas and maybe that's where you were raised, I might feel as you do, I hear everyone in TX is given a gun when they are born...just about.

Oh you mention church monthly matches whatever they are, got me thinking about guns and church and religion and wonder if god or j.c. carried a gun.

There have been quite a few church related massacres in recent times. ummm

God doesn't need one, and guns weren't invented yet when Jesus was here. Some of his disciples carried swords, though, and they were the guns of that time.

Apparently he was an employee who was being disciplined for being violent with co-workers. If he hadn't had a gun, he would have used knives, baseball bats, or bombs. He was, after all, another deranged engineer...:).

We have a church security team every service, monthly shooting matches and very pro defense and firearm friendly, also self defense groups taught by law enforcement so far over 800 been through our classes in the years we have done them, not for all but done from members suggestions and requests, we do what others do not. We have "Refuse to be a victim, LTC, self defense and other classes for members."
Yes born and raised in Texas here dad started me at 6 years old in sub junior competition with him I never stopped, then school and scouts shooting teams, college team, law enforcement and was on US Army pistol team 1st CAV Gold team, then as a civilian kept doing same, I lead a clean life and reap the rewards here from it.

Oddly we seldom see a mention of lives saved just taken,,,,,,ummmmmmmmm

Oh millions taken all over the world, senseless/stupid wars, senseless killings and when I think of all the churches I've attended in my long life, no security and certainly no shooting matches...I guess this is SOP in some states, not ones I've lived in. In the states I've resided, parents didn't even want their boys to play with guns, water guns was the most innocent....even I liked to play with those at a point. Wow/Whatever!!!!

@Joy Martin I, too, never allowed my children to play with toy guns, as I believe it instills the idea that they are playthings, and leads to a mindset of casual thinking, sometimes leading to friends being shot while "playing" with real guns as teens or younger. My children, boys and girls, were started out with real firearms with nary a toy gun in the house. They were taught to treat those tools with utmost respect. The boys hunted, but the girls had no desire to do so, but would deal with meat after it was obtained. Both my daughters have concealed carry permits where they live, but I don't think either of them carry routinely. The sons carry when hunting or fishing, and sometimes when hiking in areas where bears are a danger, but don't routinely carry otherwise.

I haven't done a study but my impression is that most mass shootings (and gun violence in general) take place in place where guns are banned, or all but banned, such as in schools, in churches that don't encourage people to defend themselves, and in cities and states with tight gun control. The bad guys hate it when people shoot back. Pretty much everyone in Maine, or at least northern Maine, has at least one weapon, but we have very little gun violence. In the twenty years that I have lived in my town, we have had two murders. One was a shaken baby death and the other was related to our newly legalized marijuana industry. The guy who set up his marijuana growing operation didn't want anyone in town to know where he was growing, so he hired some people from North Carolina to set his operations up for him. He brought the same people up a year or so later when he was expanding his operations. Aware that he kept large amounts of money in a safe, they returned to rob him. When he wouldn't give them the combination to the safe, they blinded, tortured, and then seriously injured his wife (not with a gun), and later shot the guy, killing him. They probably thought that the wife had been killed, but she survived.

Home invasions are rare and, while we have a fair amount of home and car burglaries, the people who are arrested are usually under eighteen, and often under fifteen. It's not even that people here are necessarily kind or honest, although many of them are, but people know that the people who they are thinking of robbing probably have a weapon in the house, that it may be easily accessible, and they know how to use it. If everyone were the same size, with the same physical abilities, assaults would be rare, and a gun allows someone who would otherwise be weaker to be able to defend himself, if necessary. And the very fact that people might be able to defend themselves keeps most people honest.

Why some people take pride in being defenseless is beyond my understanding.

For that matter, most people have guns in the area where I grew up in the UP of Michigan. Yet, there have been only two murders in the entire county in more than a century now. One was the rape and murder of a young girl by her teacher (surely a Democrat), which did not involve a gun. I don't remember what the other one was but I think it was a gun death during a robbery of some sort.

Obviously it depends too on the state one is born/raised in. I guess AK is where you started out?
