Did you have a childhood nickname? If so, was there a reason why it was given to you?

My nickname was / images (26).jpeg
is Sam, because I was born while my dad was in the Army.
Thus, a left over from Uncle Sam.

I had two childhood nicknames one from a cousin Bonton and one from an aunt Bonnie. I have no idea why. My real name is shortened as well, Von. My husband called me Vonnie for a while now it's just Von with an Arkansas accent Vun :D.

When I was little, my mom always called me “Yvonne”, with the accent on the “von” part of the name. My dad called me “Bonnie “ and used to sing me (my favorite song of course) the old song “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.”
Friends usually called me either “Von” or “Vonnie”, and at school my name was pronounced in a variety of ways, but not as a nickname, it was just because people weren’t sure how to pronounce it.
When meeting a new (adult) person, I could always tell if they were a friend of my mom or my dad by the name they called me, either Yvonne or Bonnie.

Besides mispronouncing my name, often times people don’t even remember it, so I am used to answering to anything that sounds remotely close , like Evelyn or Elaine , for example.
I guess that doesn’t count as a nickname, either.
My mom also called me “Snickelfritz” when I was little, and that was a nickname as well, although never used by anyone else besides my mother.
My dad called me “Grasshopper”, so I guess both of my parents had special little names for me when I was small.

When I got involved in professional rodeo, I started having folks call me Cody. I thought it was a more appropriate "rodeo" name than my legal name. My rodeo membership card had my legal first name. Actually I signed all Purchase Orders as Cody. All medical records have my nickname as Cody. All of my wife's family, and what's left of my family, call me Cody. The Preacher who married wife and I, called me Cody.

When I'd sit on my horse, with rope in hand, the name Cody went better with the "look" than my real first name. Being announced as "Cody", in the rodeo arena, sounded fine to me.

My family on my mother's side always pronounced my name as Evonne, it never sounded right to me even when I was little. When I was in school and learned that the letter 'Y' could be pronounced two ways either as "E" (long) or "Ya" (short a) which I liked better and always introduced myself that way. It is always nice when someone ask which way I pronounce it.

Which is why what happens in the forum...STAYS in the forum! A bit of anonymity is always a safer route.

No, I have never had a nickname. I had a landlady who called me Kent for five years, though. After the fourth or fifth time, I quit trying to correct her. She was really old, like maybe in her 60s.
