    It seems they got much more than they were bargaining for:

    The Weather Channel was just showing aerial photos of Bermuda... OMG, the devastation is horrible. The Red Cross says over 60,000 people need food and drinking water.

    I know. I was thinking about that. I doubt they will have internet available for awhile. Those islands down there took a serious beating. I'm glad it didn't make landfall in Florida, so that the resources needed can all go directly to them. Lord knows they need help. It will take years to rebuild.

    I think for now @Sheldon Scott is the one who is possibly in the middle of anguish. Many of those islands almost got destroyed over the weekend. It was all so unexpected and happened so fast.

    @Beth Gallagher

    "cone of uncertainty"? New one on me. Worst "cone" we ever encountered was when a Dr. (?) of my wife's proposed a Cone Biopsy of her Cervix, based on her Pap test results. She refused. He predicted dire outcome. That was in the early '90s, almost 30 years ago, she's still alive and kickin'. How can I not be negative toward doctors when much of my experience with them has been really bad......

    Well, it's obvious you don't live in a hurricane zone, @Frank Sanoica . If you watch any weather forecast of hurricane landfall, you'll see the graphic with the "cone of uncertainty" every single time. It's the estimated area where they THINK the storm will travel-- the anticipated path of the storm.

    That is what they call it when they aren't sure what it is going to do. There are lots of factors and this hurricane had its share. I follow it on this live streaming because it's not complicated:

    It is still very big and wobbly, but I think we will really luck out do to the position of the coastline.

    Ah! I suppose a whole lot of things about me are obvious, eh? All professionals seem to have developed certain vocabulary quirks which identify their own particular field of endeavor. Engineering may be one of the more notorious in that respect. Many of these "quirkies" are deeply rooted in the fact that nobody's Crystal Ball really works, so guesswork must be used.
    Frank

    EDIT: I see why "cone" is used; Despite that uncertainty, it appears the project path northward will follow a somewhat parabolic curve. That may be said in certainty.

    Not sure how "vocabulary quirks" got into this discussion, but whatever. The "cone" usually looks something like this...

    I suppose Cone of Uncertainty sounds better than "here's our best guess but we really don't know."

    Duh. I just realized I said Bermuda when I should have said the Bahamas. :oops:
