Aww Hal, everyone just missed you. I think it's great you are even attempting the whole Windows 10 change. I personally couldn't do it at all.
I think that most of us do not use a Windows computer anymore. We would have to take a survey to see, but quite a few use some kind of an Apple/Mac computer or tablet (or both), and a lot of other people on this forum really like their Chromebook, which is what Bess has said that she uses. I was so impressed with how much people like the Chromebook, and I just got one myself. I think that I have never seen anything as simple and easy to use as the Chromebook, although I still prefer my iPad over anything else I have ever used, because Apple has me totally spoiled with their awesome products. I am pretty sure that @Cody Fousnaugh said he likes his Windows 10 computer though, and there are probably others who use Windows 10, and just haven’t said much about it. Maybe some of the Windows 10 users will jump in here and help you out with the change over from Windows 7?
By the time they come up with Windows 15, you will be insisting that you are not letting go of good old Windows 10.
As far as I know there won't be another Windows version as a big release with a new version number as it used to be. W10 will just be updated and improved in an ongoing manner. In the course of time people will just be referring to "Windows" again because the version number (as was the case with the older major releases) won't play a role any longer nor will you have to pay for new versions. Upcoming upgrades and improvements are also new versions of Windows 10 but they just get the date of the update to tell them apart. I'm still using Windows 8.1. but won't be scared if I have to make the move to W10. Would do that any time if necessary. Since I have also adjusted to any major release since windows 3.1., I don't expect it to be a big problem.
7,10, 15? Maybe 20,30 and ,...and Bless my pea pickin’ soul maybe they’ll give me back Windows 98 again?
My first computer was a Commodore Vic 20. You used a modulator to connect it to your TV set. It boasted 5k of Ram and you could store data on a cassette tape recorder. 5000 bits could load 2 pages of text or data. Hal
No. I prefer a Chromebook laptop. It's self explanatory. Runs fast every time and comes with it's own virus protection. If I want anything such as a game or an app or a theme, I get it free from their Play Store. It's thin, lightweight and I can easily take it with me anywhere I go. It's perfect for me.
I'm using Windows 10, set up pretty much like Win7, no touch screen. When Win10 first came out, it was more difficult because all of the troubleshooting websites and videos had not been updated. Plenty of information out there now. I search on the internet and find solutions, then immediately forget them, so wouldn't be of much help. Just add Windows 10 as a key word. Btw, my first home computer was also a Vic 20. Didn't use it for much. More like a toy.
I also use Win10 and found the transition from 7 to be seamless. If you have a good understanding of Windows, it's fairly easy to go from one release to the next. Like Nancy said, there's plenty of help available if you search for it, including many youtube videos. I spent 30 years in IT trying to keep up with technology, so I don't have a lot of enthusiasm for learning new things. I recently bought a Macbook and so far I dislike it immensely. We all fall victim to wanting to stay with what's familiar.
We didn't wait until Black Friday to get my wife's new Dell Inspiration laptop. It was on sale at Best Buy for $300 less. It is super, super fast. Doesn't have a hard drive. It is Solid State inside. Has Windows 10, that my wife is getting used to using. Lucky we bought an external CD/DVD Player when we got the desktop, because the new laptop doesn't have one. Had to buy, separately, a package including Word, Excel, Publisher, Access and one other. That was about $200, plus an extra year of Warranty for $160. First year covered by Dell, second covered by Best Buy. Any problems after that, will take to Stapes Office Supplies. Basically, everything my wife wanted in a laptop, this one has. I set it up for her a couple of days ago.
@Hal Pollner -- Here are several Youtube videos on the basics of Windows 10. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=basics+of+windows+10 You can also search for videos for specific operations that you need help with, such as how to make 10 look like 7... https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=make+windows+10+look+like+windows+7
Interesting I also spent 30+ years in IT. Began coding in 1959. My first computer was an IBM PC(which was a dog), everything until 2015 was Microsoft and then my son gave me enough money for my birthday to buy an I-Mac and I love it and could never go back to Windows.
Wow, 1959! My career began in 1984, around the time of the 2nd generation IBM-PC. In our family, my husband is the "Mac guy." Here's his first "Powerbook 170." Not sure how old it is; I believe it was from 1991 or so. I found it stacked with an old Dell PC running Windows Vista in a file cabinet. I seriously need to clean out the old junk in the study!!
