    "Push to disarm police officers gains steam in New York"

    "A New York congressional candidate is arguing that taking guns away from law enforcement will make communities safer."

    Well, safer for the criminals, beyond doubt. Regular citizens? Maybe, assuming the majority of cops believe everyone is a criminal.

    Hell, one idea doesn't work, so why not try the opposite?

    It is the absolute dumbest idea I have ever heard. The cops should go on strike and refuse to put their life in worse danger than they already do.

    @Bess Barber

    If it passed, what proportion of the force do you think would seek employment elsewhere?

    I think they should protest in the streets as a group and refuse to respond to calls until it was overturned. Of ALL places, they are the ones who possibly need to be armed the most. Cops don't just shoot innocent people arbitrarily. Most people who get shot deserved to.

    Without a way to protect themselves, they are like open duck season without any bushes to hide in. I would imagine at least 75% would walk off the job. It's too dangerous without being armed.

    OTOH, London's police were unarmed traditionally for a very long time, were they not?

    @Bob Kirk

    Ya suppose their shooting skills are as good as those of civilians'? We read so often of an armed individual being shot by police 50 or 60 times.

    Nothing beats knowing for sure the criminal that was dumb enough to try a shoot out with police than looking like Swiss cheese at the end of a gun battle. Police adapting to what criminals have reminds me it didn't take long for Indians to figure out arrows weren't as fast & effective as bullets.

    Even though lots of criminals in the UK, and Europe, obviously have guns, I don't think it's the same epidemic as we have in our big cities, especially among the various gangs. Our police absolutely need to be armed. Even in rural areas, an unarmed policeman would be considered a joke.
