I would much prefer to live the life I had ten years ago, but that will never be.

    Wouldn't we all?

Since I have retired I have plenty of time to watch movies but I have found that watching movies by oneself is no fun. I need someone to laugh at the funny spots and cry at the sad parts.

My friend who moved into a $6K+ month retirement facility probably has gained 20 lbs since she sits down to 3 full meals as scheduled with all that's put on plates and on tables. She's active in the bridge group there.

Having just finished my Cioppino Dinner I could not fail to notice other residents in the dining room. Here it is Friday nite and the ladies appear to have had their hair and nails done today as a post Halloween November 1st event. It struck me that in my life time, Thursday,Friday & Saturday seemed to be Grooming Days for women. Most of the senior men on the other hand appeared un-shaven & slovenly. It's for that reason that I choose to sit in close proximity to women rather than men. They not only look better, but also smell better.

Lon, that's when the social security and Medicaid stipends hit and the ladies have money to pamper themselves. It's that way at every care facility.

Why oh why @Lon Tanner can you not post a thread without posting a picture of what you eat? Post the pictures yes, but post them in the thread meant for your meal time how about? The pictures are great indeed and I realize that there’s not much else going on that gives you as much pleasure as your meal time but it seems that there’s a time and place for everything .........or maybe not.

To the OP.......Women always groom themselves differently than men do and I really do not think being a senior has much to do with it nor whether they’re eating a meal or not.
Perhaps the men feel more at home than the ladies do and really secretly want to kick back with a beer, clad only in their knickers and watch TV whilst eating their cioppino or chicken or whatever. Basically, men are slobs compared to the ladies and that’s just the way it is.
Perhaps @Jerry Adams has a very valid point but my findings are that again, most men are slobs unless they’re cruising for a little company.

Oh Al, your post are always so honest and deserve an honest answer. Here is what you may not know about some of the ladies that surround you at meal time. They appear all neat and smell nice, but like the men their razors are not seeing the use they once did. We can cover up our legs, but the guys can't cover their faces without causing alarms to go off. No excuse for smelly guys not showering before meal time in a social setting. I was never one for much perfume, but right after it came out, I was given a gift of Destiny by Marilyn Miglin and wore it almost daily up until last year. I agree that older women seem to "spruce up" (my mothers words) more for social occasions than older men. Do the ladies that surround you, wear perfume?

I love scent but don't detect much from the resident females.

That is probably a good thing Lon. So many ladies at our senior center social events, are so strong with perfume, it make me ill. I suppose that maybe their sense of smell isn't as good as it once was which might account for the overdose. The thing I like about my Destiny, is it is hard to overdose.

I don't know why that is, but it does seem to be so. I remember my mother nagging my dad to take a shower; he didn't seem motivated without her prompting as they got older. I suppose (by my own experience) that women are more apt to have a daily routine that includes personal hygiene. I take a bath every single night because it relaxes me and I can't stand the thought of going to bed without bathing first. I also wear fresh clean clothes every day, just a personal preference. So I suppose every day is "grooming day" for me; I don't wait till the weekend.

I have informed my husband that he's not going to turn into a smelly old goat as long as I'm alive. :D

I/we my wife & me don't live in a facility like you do but IMO personal appearance is something that is a matter of pride. I think in a group setting like you have there is no excuse for not showing up for every meal every day of the week clean shaven and bathed/showered.

BTW that meal looks awesome. Looks to me like you live in a great facility.

Speak for yourself Mr. Peanut Butter Spoon. :D I eat vicariously through @ Lon Tanner 's food picture posts!
It reminds me of what I COULD be eating if I wasn't too lazy to cook. I like looking at them.

All residents have been furnished with certain rules of living here, no verbal abuse of staff members, public profanity, drunkenness, wearing of bed clothes in dining area and public spaces.
Female residents are better dressed and groomed than male residents. Many of the males are sloppy appearing and poorly groomed.
Helen is a attractive woman that I guess to be in early 70's. Hair & nails just perfect with stylish shoes, HOWEVER. It seems like she has worn the same colorful blouse every day for months and I find that interesting. She was married to a doctor that died of Alzheimer's in this facility two years ago.She is a breast cancer survivor.
