OK, you can be the new marshal in town. Just don't shoot anybody in my saloon. I hate cleaning up blood off my floors. Who wants to be a corrupt politician? Anyone??? If you get rid of all the crooked politicians, we will name our town Swansonville.
Well mam that is plum generous of y'all. I am however..not lookin' for notoriety. I hate ornery critters spoilin' good folks lives is all. As a preacher I can do nothing about them. But as a lawman I can. Just give me a badge.. a couple of deputies and a gunbelt and I promise you I will clean this town of all the filth. I am wonderin' tho how my sister is goin' to take this news. She never did like it when I carried a gun.
Oh no! That's a big NO, brother! You still remember when our Mum pleaded you not to touch the gun, the very last time she talked? Bless her. You need to think about that over and over.
Sis I think this is somethin' I have to do.. destined to do. A way of makin' up for my violent past... I am sure our mother will understand if she were here. I hope you do to. Still I will do whatever you wish.
Sigh ......................... (Emily looking at the sky through the window, thinking that she might leave her brother if he doesn't change his mind)
I have arranged for you to become the new school mistress when the present one retires in two weeks. You dreamt of us makin' a new start. That money I have put aside for a cottage for us is all the money I have. We are going to need somethin' to live on. You will draw a good wage as school mistress. When my work is done with these bad people.. I promise you the gunbelt stays off for good. You have my word on our dear mamma's grave. I may even stand for the town mayor.
Accepting the school-mistress arrangement and agreeing your passionate willingness to become a town mayor are two different things. I am qualified as a teacher. I can teach anywhere if I wish. Hey brother, I don't like arguments, you know it, right?
Now we have a slight problem.. Elections for mayor and councillors comes up in a few days.. Why don't we wait for the elections and vote the entire gang out of office.. that way, you won't have to shoot or hang anyone.. What about us having a female mayor.. She could be mayor and a school mistress at the same time.. that would give her a double income of money but take up all of her time.. When would she be able to work the farm ?? I still need a wife that can work out there and also drive the tractor to plow the fields..
Emily do you hear that. Steve North may have come up with the perfect solution to the town's problem without me having to tie on a gunbelt again in anger. Once law and order is maintained I am only too happy to be the town Marshall.
Someone said there is an opportunity for me to be elected as a female mayor and a school mistress, at the same perfect time! Oh wow! I was flabbergasted! How on Earth you can do both assignments at the same time?! It's like pulling my head right and left. I shall absolutely choose the assignment on education. It takes a while but lasts longer than politics. How say you, brother?
The position of mayor does not require very much time.. Only one meeting per month and it is in the evening.. you will still have the position of school mistress full time.. however you will have to appoint some councillors, a marshall, and a town manager..
How about Thomas Stearn. I have an idea for his role. German immigrant has some political experience in North Carolina where Emily and I lived for many years. We befriended him in 1866. he is a good, honest man of integrity.
But Mr. @Steve North, it takes a lot of responsibilities. You can't just do it for fun nor games. You are obliged to give your full time to serve people; that's called integrity. Exclude me please. I have no ambition in pursuing money and all that social-status ladder.
Mr Mr North. I have a feeling my sister does not want the mayoral position. Why dont you try for it. Or if I may.. suggest someone. He is a German friend of my sister and me that we knew in NC. He came to the US in '59 and has had some political experience. I only have to telegraph and ask him.
