I was a skinny 12 year old trying to push a wheelbarrow full of rocks across a plowed field for 25 cents per hour and lasted 20 minutes when the farmer took mercy on me.
I took a temp job when my band hit a very short dry spell (lasted two weeks). I was sent to a company that did data entry for large corporations. My job was to sit at a computer, and enter numbers from sheets that were stacked on my desk. I came in at 8AM. Break was set for 10:30 AM. I got up, got in my van, and left. Felt great to get out of there. I never called the temp company, never had a desire to get paid for the time I spent doing that terrible job. Shortly thereafter, my band booked a two month gig at a nearby resort club. Life was good, again!
Delivering furniture for a furniture store. No fun carrying sofas and the like up a flight of stairs. Another was roofer's helper. Ripping off old shingles on a ladder on a hot and humid day was not fun. I was up there once and saw a dog laying down in the shade of the next house looking up at me. Who was the dumb animal? I threw a shingle at him. That job was the last straw. I made it a point to get myself educated.
My wife wanted to be an Accountant, like her mom. My wife decided that having two AA's wasn't going to be enough to get her the salary she really, really wanted, so...…...she went back to college (university) and got her BA when she was 49 years old. She could've went on and got her CPA, but decided "enough is enough" for education. Besides that, she knew she'd be working many more hours, being a CPA, that simply having a BA in Accounting/Business Admin. So, since getting her BA, she's been a Senior Acct., Financial Analyst and worked in both AR and AP...…….all with nice salaries from that BA.
Let’s see, shortest job. Well, that would be the one that I would call a “work in progress” but unfortunately, I didn’t stick around to see what kind of progress that would be. Nearly every day brought upon masses amounts of confusion, strife and bickering. Tell the truth, I’ve probably never had to work that hard to keep some semblance of sanity. Yes, at 5’3”, my x-wife was the shortest job I’ve ever had.
Summer job. Fountain girl at a drive-in. About 3 weeks. I loved it. Fun crew to work with in the kitchen. Got an offer for a better paying job after working there only a week or two. I stayed around long enough for them to hire a replacement anyway. Probably wasn't there long enough for the fun to wear off.
Briefly around 1982, had to work at Dairy Queen - mu hubby at the time had left me and me and the two girls were way out i the country. Swinging that industrial mop at 2am was beyond painful. We only had one 10 minutes break all day - that was lunch. Plus like Lucille Ball when she worked for them- i could not make that damn squiggle on the cones.! One day, I said- i am done- moving back to the big city and get me a real job!
Gloria Making the ice cream squiggle just right is a trick. I can do it but, first couple times they look pretty bad.
When I was a teenager in the early 1950s, I got a job as a Christmas Tree Salesman at a grocery store. I sold one tree and quit, feeling pretty satisfied with myself! H.P.
I cleaned out rental property in between tenants, just to pay bills (obviously, it was not the achievement of some weird career aspiration.) I often say that it's a side of humanity you don't want to see, but I'm not really certain humans were involved.
Good morning to all- Well, let's see... I have done a lot of short-term jobs during the summer between school terms. I've worked in paper box factories, I've washed dishes in restaurants, I've helped build commercial chicken houses, helped bail hay, and my most recent short-term summer job was to work with my wife as a team cleaning up vacation rental condo apartments. That seemed to us from our original position of total ignorance as an easy way to make some money between school terms. We were wrong. Cleaning condos is damned hard work, and it must be done fast before the next batch of renters arrives wanting their vacation to begin. Of course, we knew that we did not have to do this job for long, and with the end of summer we'd be back in the classroom doing our real jobs, and it is amazing how we can put up with really nasty, difficult situation if we know that it's only very short term work. But, Lord, if I knew I had to do that kind of work the rest of my life... Might make things much less bearable. And you really don't want to know what sort of things certain vacationers leave behind... in cases, it might even be considered as evidence for possible crimes. Glad I don't have to clean up now- except for myself. good day to all- Ed
