I just received my gardening hat from Amazon:

Here it is in real life:

    IMG_20200629_101217332.jpg

Not bad for $20. As you can see in the Amazon pic, the mask and the neck guard attach to the hat's fabric loops via little plastic coat hanger type clips. There are extra loops where you can clip the front of the neck guard further back so it does not surround your face as much as I have it in that pic.

I didn't get a shot of the top. It's not branded as the Amazon pic shows, and the vents are a band around the base of the crown (where the logo is in the pic) and not the top as shown. So many of these Asian vendors have a "concept pic" and then a bunch of differing products made at different times from different factories that they pull out of the bin at random. This is the downside of the loss of brick & mortar stores. You cannot inspect before buying.

We'll see how it works. Rated 4.5 out of 5.0 by 166 reviewers. The negative reviews said their necks still got burnt through the cheap guard. The fabric is sheer. I could get other fabric and use an iron-on adhesive to affix it. I also wear a mask when I mow (for some reason the pollen/dust has started to bother me the past few years.) I don't know if this mask will be sufficient, but it's no big deal.

Me thinks you need some sort of “super hero” shirt and a riding lawnmower with a turbine engine in it to compliment the hat. :)

    LOL!!!

I'll have to get a pic of me wearing that on my Kubota.

I can't decide if it makes me look like someone who causes you to clutch your kids just a little bit tighter, or if people will take me for Peter O'Toole's stunt double.

If I had one of those, maybe I'd wear it to the grocery store.

Great minds think alike , @Ken Anderson ! I just looked at @John Brunner’s hat and said the same thing to myself. I am avoiding anyplace that calls for a mask because it is hard for me to get sufficient oxygen without having a filter over my nose and mouth; but some places (like going to the doctors office) are necessary.
This covers enough of the face that it should be “compliant”, since the real reason is only submission to authority, and not something that actually does any good anyway.
So, I went right to Amazon and ordered one for myself !

This will soon be my new “have to wear a mask” look:

    I love you guys!!!

That is exactly on the top of my list of things to do. I just need to buy me some mirror shades.

If only I could find a Darth Vader voice box.

How is breathing when you have the face mask on, @John Brunner ? Since I can see (barely) your face underneath the mask, it seems to me like you would be getting more pure air than what comes through one of the medical masks they wear .
I have tried several of the face masks that are supposed to give a person “breathing room”, but I am still breathing recycled air with all of them.

Perhaps a little paint on that new outfit?

It is not a real mask. It is a piece of cloth with a vent sewed into it that is suspended from the brim of the hat.

It hangs down in front of your face like a cheap curtain. When you lean forward, it droops away. In fact, you can make it hang real loose.

Here's my initial pic I discarded. There are a number of loops in the hat to affix the hangers to. This pic is where I affixed the mask to the front most 2 loops, and the front hangers of the neck shade were affixed right behind them:

    IMG_20200629_093918646.jpg

The pic that's in my original post has the neckshade affixed to the 2 front most loops (so it wraps further forward), with the mask affixed to the 2 loops behind them (so it draws tighter to my face.) This is as they are attached in the above Amazon pic, with the mask hanging behind the front of the neck shade.

If you look at the Amazon pic, you can see all of the available attachment points.

    @Yvonne Smith

I don't know how much this helps, but you can see the sidewalk right through this mask.

    IMG_20200629_140317862_HDR.jpg

I pull it extremely tight against my mouth and nose, and it's not much more restrictive than nylon netting would be.

The orders requiring the use of a mask don't generally specify that it has to be an effective mask, otherwise, 99% of the masks that people are wearing would be ineligible, so I'm thinking any kind of mask should work. If I had a Lone Ranger mask, I'd wear that.

Bringing this (somewhat) back on topic, I have no need for any particular head apparel while working in the garden but I have considered mosquito netting while working outside at my camp because, at times of the year, the mosquitos and other biting things are really bad.

I have about 7 acres of maintainable yard on my 50+ acre lot. It takes me maybe 5 hours of tractor time to cut it, and that does not include any weed eating that gets done. I bought this hat because last time I cut my grass, the back of my neck got purple-burnt...again. I've been sun burnt so many times in my life I'm real paranoid about skin cancer (although I have no signs of it or family history.)

We have our share of mosquitoes here, but ticks are worse. Lyme disease (and that red meat allergy you get from Lone Star ticks) is somewhat of a concern. Regarding mosquitoes, I once read that one remedy is a low-speed fan. You don't even have to feel the breeze, because the flight of those tiny things is so easily disrupted.

Mine arrived today, and I like it ! I can actually breathe through this one, and it still meets the requirement of having to wear a mask when I have no choice except to wear one.
Thank you again for sharing this with us, @John Brunner !
You have started a new trend here.....

    LOL!!!

    You look mahvalous, dahling!!!

I wore mine today, but the guy asked where my MAGA mask was.

The only thing I've yet to test is the neck guard. Some reviews state that it's too sheer to be effective. We'll see...

edit to add: The neck guard on yours seem to be of heavy material. Is it? Mine is as thing as a 10 year old KMart pillow case.

The neck guard on mine is the same material as the hat, and it is lightweight, but not too thin. I think it would prevent sunburn on my neck, as well as most bug bites.
    It feels rainproof, too.

I was thinking about the MAGA thing, maybe a sash around the hat brim; but then I remembered that people are getting badly beaten up for nothing more than wearing a red baseball cap, whether it says MAGA or not.
I do not want to be attacked when shopping for my groceries, so I am going to have to think about the MAGA idea. Maybe a WWG1WGA pin would be okay, or just an American flag.
Maybe not, they burn those now, too !
