Nobody should have any trouble identifying this great song from the musical "Show Boat"! "He don't plant Taters, he don't plant Cotton, And them that plants 'em are soon forgotten..." Hal
Yes, Yvonne...Sinatra did a magnificent rendition of "Old Man River", but the greatest black voices ever to sing it were Paul Robeson and Metropolitan Opera baritone William Warfield, Hal
I liked always Peggy Lee. "Is That All There Is, My Friend?" Remember Vicki Carr? Birth name: Florencia Bisenta de Casillas-Martinez Cardona.
Musicals are not my cup of tea. And how could anyone like a musical starring Maurice Chevalier? Not to mention Jeanette MacDonald and her high-pitched voice? But this may be my new favorite. Love Me Tonight (1932) Musical Comedy. Jeanette MacDonald, Maurice Chevalier, Myrna Loy, Charlie Ruggles. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian I watched it night before last. It is so silly, but in a delightful way. They talk in rhyme much of the time. MacDonald's voice is perfect for comedy. A younger Chevalier's smile is contagious. I believe it was the first musical whose setting was not on the Vaudeville stage. The director wove the music into the story in a believable way. No big productions. And a favorite oldie was recurrent throughout. Not too slow. Not too serious. Just right. Isn't It Romantic? Rogers and Hart (6 min clip) COLORIZED VERSION (better sound)
