I don't, but I hear some Seniors say that because they worked hard all their life they are entitled to so and so. War Veterans, particularly Disabled War Veterans have paid a big price for their entitlements but merely growing old is no price to pay, it's a privilege.
I served in the military, I got the education I needed to make a living, and stayed out of trouble. In other words, I contributed to society. There are a lot of bums out there who want something for nothing. Yes I'm entitled.
I feel entitled to my social security income. I paid into that for 30 years whether I wanted to or not, so I want what was promised to me.
Lon, you didn't say why you don't feel entitled nor what precisely other seniors feel entitled to? Whenever somebody plays by the rules, this person is entitled to certain things, e.g., when you invest in a company's stocks, you are entitled to get dividends if the company is in the position to pay them. The same with pensions. After you have paid contributions for a lifetime you are entitled to get the pension in old age as stipulated. Another example is wages and salaries which people are entitled to get after having done the job. What's wrong with feeling entitled in these contexts or do you mean something you didn't say in your OP?
I think Lon is using the political definition of entitled. You know, getting a freebie, that you did nothing to earn. Then there are different entitlements. Senior discount, not an entitlement, but so ubiquitous many think it is. Respect, In general I think seniors are entitled to a bit more respect than others. Sure there are many ugly seniors but getting through life should entitle a bit of respect. Many veterans seem to think that they are entitled to a discount. NO! I am appreciative of a discount ,but am in no way entitled to it.
Your explanation makes a lot of sense, @Peter Renfro , and maybe that is what Lon was trying to express in the OP. I agree that we should be entitled to things like social security that we have worked and paid into for many years, and I think that Medicare is part of that. As far as the senior discounts, I think that they are wonderful, and I am thankful when a store offers a senior discount; but I do not expect to pay less just because I am a senior. Some of the grocery stores used to have a Senior’s Day for shopping where we got a discount on all of our groceries; but I don’t think that they are doing that here anymore.
I am entitled to my SS, under the law. That's it, no more, no less. Anything else I wanted to have, any lifestyle I wanted to live, I had to work for, as I did, and as I now enjoy. One of the big problems in our world, today, are those who feel entitled to this and that because of past, historical wrongs to the group, or groups, they identify with. Total and complete BS, as I see it. If you want something, you effing WORK for it! If you want respect, you damn well EARN IT by your actions!
