Shirley it celebrates our British settlement from 1770-1788. To be brutally blunt this colonial celebration has no relevance in today's Australia. I'd prefer we changed the date to better reflect modern Australia. The most obvious would be when we became a Federated, Independent and Sovereign nation on Jan1, 1901. Our indigenous people also want the present date changed as they regard that as "invasion day" by a foreign power.. Britain. What is the background behind July 4 for you Americans.
i do not want to talk politics here , craig , but our America is going to change , big time!!! all the blame is on Trump..
Craig and Kate, I remember reading that Aussieland was started as a penal colony. I learned that in history. Like so many things we learned in history, It's inaccurate or only partly accurate. I thought Aussies today must be a bad bunch if their ancestors were all outlaws. I have since learned that most of the settlers were actually sent there because they were "Enemies" of those in power. Their only crime was to be breve enough to do what they thought was right.
Craig, this country is divided as never before. I believe that some entity has caused the division. My first guess would be China. Every forum you read on has at least one person stirring hatred. There is one on here. I'd bet you good money that he is a troll.
Good guess Shirley. Either them or Russia... or both collaborating. God help the world if those two ever palled up militarily.
We have visited one of penal colony’s of Australia that is in Tasmania (a long way off the coast of Melbourne ) It was horrific what people were convicted of and the gruesome treatment they received (some where given life for stealing a loaf of bread ) And if and when they died while in custody their bodies were taken to an island and used for manure for growing the prisons vegetables ...We was told this by a tour guide https://portarthur.org.au/history/#section-2
You stood up to and even took up arms against your colonial master. You are to be admired for that. The closest we came to rebellion over British rule was the Eureka Revolt when hundreds of miners took up arms against the British over mining claims.
