I have salmon and trout spawning in my backyard. I see this every year, but some runs are heavier than others and sometimes the state takes the salmon for roe and milt for the hatcheries. I have fished on the Copper River, but we can do it with a net since we are residents. By the way, salmon this red are particularly good eating.

 

Unless perhaps a merchant ship at night.

 

Different species turn red differently, but, yes, generally you don't want to eat a salmon that has turned red. Some pink tinge is usually okay though.

Red salmon is a species of Pacific salmon, also called Sockeye salmon. It is the richest meat. King, or Chinook salmon is the largest and the fattiest. Silver, or Coho is generally frozen here. Dog salmon, also called Chum, is one prized by the Natives and the hardiest as it is the only one found above the Arctic Circle, and finally Humpy, or Pink salmon are the most numerous and usually caught only in saltwater, as the coloring begins as soon as the fish hits any brackish water and the fish is generally not considered edible by Alaskans if caught in fresh water streams.
