Hubby is picking up carryout from a local cafeteria. I ordered liver and onions, mashed potatoes, and steamed spinach with a wheat roll and iced tea.
Good girl!! Liver and onions are manna from Heaven. I would have had peas rather than spinach, but that's an insignificant transgression we can chalk up to personal taste. Man, now I want some.
I never cook liver because I'm the only one who likes it, so when we order from a cafeteria I usually get some. It's never as good as "homemade", though. The cafeteria gravy is nasty so I'm glad they serve it on the side-- but there were plenty of grilled onions. I like most green veggies so the peas versus spinach debate is a moot point.
Today will be mexican food as usual on Sunday. Not sure if I want a taco salad or some enchiladas, though.
I've mentioned before, I've only had a couple of friends who liked the stuff, so they would get a phone call when I'd make it and we would have a liverfest at my place. That's too bad about the cafeteria gravy. as an aside: Did you know that those slider belly bombs you get from Little Tavern (or maybe it was White Castle) have liver in them? I got one of those 1980s "Reversed Recipe" flyers that showed how to make them. It's the real deal. (I've probably mentioned that before, too, but I'm too lazy to go look.)
I don't believe I've ever had a "slider belly bomb." And yeah, I think the cafeteria gravy was packaged mix...yuck. But the liver was grilled with onions so no biggie on the gravy, and the mashed potatoes were creamy and didn't need it.
One of these places had the slogan "Buy 'Em By The Bag," because you could pound down half a dozen without missing a stride.
Today, for the first time ever, I actually bought some fresh mushrooms. At Kroger. A whole pound. They were called white mushrooms. Just wanted to see if they tasted like the ones we used to pick in the field and fry in butter. They do. For supper? In this sequence. Not all mixed together. . Large glass unsweetened grapefruit juice A dozen tiny frozen pizza snack rolls (Michelina's) 1 Goo-Goo Cluster 12 white mushrooms sautéed in butter (no garlic) (all good)
Rotisserie chicken, sauteed yellow squash and onions, corn on the cob, mixed green salad. I have deboned the left over chicken and tossed into the freezer to make enchiladas at a later date.
