The compost pile is coming along as expected. The summers go well because I can add a balance of compostables to it. Winters are tougher. I am harvesting my old compost pile. The upper half of it was easy because I was removing all the tape from the cardboard boxes and making more of an effort to ensure that everything there was actually compostable. However, the lower half is stuff that I added a few years ago, when I was still learning, so there's a lot of crap in it, the bulk of which I now have to place into trash bags to be hauled away to the transfer station. It's so much easier to get rid of the tape before the box composts.
Fire is good. We burned our trash in Indiana and for some time after we moved to Northern Virginia in the early 60s. The only good thing about having sisters were the Aqua Net cans that exploded when heated.
We used to burn our trash in a metal barrel. My sons would collect spray cans just to throw into the barrel. It made a very satisfying boom! when it exploded.
I don't know that my neighbors would appreciate the explosions so I think I'll stick to wood and paper stuff.
I'm used to an area where you hear shotguns in the wee hours of the morning and just roll over and go back to sleep. Hunting season is even more noisier. But I can't think of any aerosol items I've got to burn. Just about everything is in a pump sprayer. I'd have to go to Walmart and buy some cans of hair spray...
We still burn trash in metal barrels and debris on the ground as well if it is not a wildfire risk. We have a transfer staion where the garbage goes about once every other month. We also compost any manure we have and all plant waste from the gardens.
I have finished harvesting my old compost pile. All that remains is to bag up the trash that was in it and bring it to the transfer site. What to do with that spot is another matter. I don't want another compost pile there and it's too shaded for most gardening things. I think I still have some wildflower seeds around that I decided not to use in the back, as I will be going with lupines, so maybe I'll plant them there. They are supposed to be for partially shaded areas. If they grow, they grow; if they don't, they don't.
Grrrrrrrrr... I had one BLACK lilly. don't remember where I got it. I was amazed by the color and had all sorts of plans. My daughter said someone shredded the stem and dug up the bulb and ate it!!!! Anyone like woodchuck stew?
Okay, I finished with my old compost pile. I'm not sure what I'm going to put here but I won't be putting another compost pile here.
