We have been having a run of triple digit days and I keep my apartment at 73 degrees F. The air conditioner stopped cooling last night and my apartment temp went to 82 which made sleep almost impossible. Maintainence fixed it with Freon and now all is OK. I am looking forward to a better night tonight.
In the really hot days of summer, the thermostat is set around 80 in mid day, moving down to 75 at night. It can get complicated sometimes because I have a 2-story house and 2 thermostats, and I tinker with them a lot. I can't sleep well in a hot room either. In winter I often shut the heat completely off upstairs at night. It doesn't get that cold here.
The issue out my way is more humidity than temp. My old house has no insulation, so Thermostat Setting and House Temperature are usually two different things. The temp in my home is usually 73-75 on a really hot day, but again, it's more a matter of keeping the humidity down than it is being chilly.
Either 76 or 77 day/night. But, if we leave to go somewhere, we will put the thermostat up to 80, so the AC won't come on. For today and tomorrow, our temp is dropping some 16 degrees from yesterday. After that, back into the low 90's again.
Well, I guess once again old Faye is the forum oddball. I keep my house at 68 all year round and usually wear little clothes unless someone comes to visit. I have several blankets handy for guests.
IOW, Faye, your house temp can be like walking into a doctor's clinic............cold! But, there are other places that feel like a "meat locker" as well. Last weekend we went out for breakfast. It was on the cool side outside, but the inside of the restaurant was like a "meat locker", along with the ceiling fans on. We were pretty surprised that, it being that cool outside, the restaurant would have their thermostat turned down that low along with the ceiling fans on.
Given that we don't have air conditioning, I get whatever nature wants to give me, with the exception of several fans that may be employed. On the positive side, we generally only have a few days a year with temperatures about the mid to high-80s, if that. Then again, I didn't have air conditioning when I lived in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas either, and we routinely had temperatures above 100. Oh, we could afford air conditioning, and we had a couple of window AC units when we first moved here, but it doesn't make sense to have to store them for 300 days of the year when they aren't really necessary.
On the really hot days it's hard for the a/c to keep up so I leave it on 78 till it starts to get cooled down outside.
81 days 80 at night. Just to keep the humidity down. We use fans. Storms knock out power somtimes for days so we have never gotten use to keeping house too cool. Plus we were working outsside alot last year and still do at times so we don't want extream change.
It’s 91 today in La Mirada, CA, which is hot. We keep are home at 72 degrees and it’s well insulated. We have an oscillating fan in the bedroom and in the living room. The fans keep the air circulating which feels pleasant. We do have AC but we seldom turn it on unless it gets too hot and humid. On hot days I like to relax, read and drink plenty of ice water. We can also go swimming anytime to get in some exercise.
