Tab Hunter Talks Hollywood, His Leading Ladies and Working for Warner Bros. Start at time16:30 on video for his remarks on Raoul Walsh in Battle Cry
Thanks for the video, Joe. Mr. Walsh still has a little bit of a New York accent (e.g., dropping his R's). He is a good story teller.
"Raoul Walsh's 52-year directorial career made him a Hollywood legend. Walsh was also an actor: He appeared in the first version of W. Somerset Maugham's "Rain" renamed Sadie Thompson (1928) opposite Gloria Swanson in the title role. He would have played the Cisco Kid in his own film In Old Arizona (1928) if an errant jackrabbit hadn't cost him his right eye by leaping through the windshield of his automobile. Warner Baxter filled the role and won an Oscar. Before John Ford and Nicholas Ray, it was Raoul Walsh who made the eye-patch almost as synonymous with a Hollywood director as Cecil B. DeMille's jodhpurs". (Read more of BIO)
I've always been curious about the movie Sadie Thompson (also starring Lionel Barrymore). Finally watched it today. A perfect day because it rained off and on almost all day here. The acting was quite good all around, if you ignore the exaggerated expressions necessary in silent films. Gloria Swanson produced the movie. I read the production was fraught by problems with censors, but it turned out to be one of her most successful movies. Unfortunately the nitrate film had disintegrated right near the end and they used some still photos as fillers.
I didn't realize that Gloria produced it. The film reels may not have been properly stored. What a shame.
