(10/10/21) Saturday Results of spraying, corner of property at the main road. I missed the vines on top of some tall bushes, but one more round next June/July should finish off the bad stuff, for a while. For a few dollars and a few hours work, the neighbor could get rid of his kudzu once and for all, but it's rental property.
Yesterday I found the perfect bucket in the basement to put over the clothesline pole. Had to drag out the ladder to get it up there. Hope it stops the rain, and the bluebirds come back. This picture reminded me of Sgt. Schultz on Hogan's Heroes. "I see nothing"

Yeah, Georgia has earned the number one spot in the rankings. Congratulations. Three of Big !2 teams have joined the SEC. Two more will be joined when they are released to play with SEC, Texas and Oklahoma. Four teams have been invited to come to the Big 12 Conference. Tfhey are: Brigum Young University (BYU) University in Provo, Utah; the University of Houston from Houston, Texas; Cincinnati University f4rom Ohio; and Central Florida, I guess from Florida. I think this will tempt other conferences to add other school to theiir conferences. Nebraska did leave the Big 12 for the Big 10. With all this shuffling around don't know when things will settle down. I guess it is all about power and. Not sure what Texas and Oklahoma will add to the SEC. Right now and for the paswt several coaches, say from Mac Brown's time as a coach ay Texas, they have been trying for a co0meback, a national power team. They have failed at this. Will it happen under this present coach? I seriousely doubt it. It will be harder for any team in the future, after Texas and OU began playing for SEC, harder for any team to be outstanding as Alabama has done in the past. But in the future with television contracts as lucrative as they have been and no doubt will continue for a while, it is all power and money as it has been. I think we h ave been and continue to be more greedy which may someday ruin the game or the universies. Right now, Georgia has earned top spot, earned it by their playing. Some day in the near future the top spot may have to be bought, by buying coaches and players. Foot, we're already buying coaches so it is not as far astretch as I thought.
I remember talk, quite a few years ago, that universities should all just go ahead and hire teams to play for them, and forget student athletes. There is a waiting list to get tickets to games here. It uses a rating system, and your position on the list depends a lot on how much money you've contributed to the Athletic Association. Then you have to buy a season ticket. Few can afford all that.
(10/20/21) Wednesday A catbird landed briefly on the deck railing. They usually stay in the bushes. I didn't realize they could also sing a pretty tune. If I ever heard one sing I probably assumed it was a mockingbird. "In North America mimics include mockingbirds, thrashers, and catbirds; all of which are in the family Mimidae, so named because of this family’s skill at mimicking other species." -Cornell Ornithology Lab Last week a brown thrasher (our state bird) visited my new bird bath. A vintage shallow Pyrex loaf cake baking dish. Catbird Mimicry:
They do look a lot alike. Catbirds are mostly solid gray. Mockingbirds are a little bigger and have white bars on their wings. From a distance, you can see the bars most easily when they take off and land. . Have you heard the expression "In the catbird seat"? . . .
3:45 pm: .A bird I've never seen before, pecking away at the block of dried mealworms no other bird has been interested in. So many black and white patches, you couldn't make heads or tails out of it. About the size of a sparrow. It must be a female (no red spot on head) downy woodpecker. Left:. Female Hairy Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus) Right:. Female Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) This is getting interesting.
I've seen a female and male downey woodpecker a few timeson my bird feeder. Not a good shot but here's my male:
