Maynard was a Terrible influence on my early life! I was being “cute” when I told my dad, “I dig it man” and that’s when he left and came back with a shovel. I dug it and dug it, and dug it.
It started with gravediggers interviewing apprentices. "It's a gig man, digging coffin holes, can you dig it?"
I remember watching reruns of Dobie Gillis as a kid, loved that show. Thought Tuesday Weld was just about the most beautiful woman on the planet. As for old-fashioned slang, I sometimes use 'curses' in lieu of an actual curse. My mum, who never cursed once in her life that I know of, favoured it, and I appreciated the all-purpose ambivalent nature of it. Other times, though, I curse like a sailor. It's sort of all or nothing for me.
Never heard those ones before, they sound Southern? Decades ago we had South Carolina folk as neighbours, they used to say 'Jesum Crow' a lot, which to this day makes me smile. Fun people.
"Ain't you a sweet-scented dandy," comes from my reading Huckberry Finn as a kid. Huck's drunken cruel father said that to Huck when he saw Huck after being cleaned up. It became my favorite saying to the three neighbor boys on the ranch nearest ours. After reading it, I couldn't wait to use it. There was a death in the rural community of a well-liked older rancher. I went to the graveside services with my folks and the three boys were there in suits, something a lot different than the dirty jeans and western shirts they usually wore. "Well aren't you three sweet-scented dandies," I said. Their mother laughed and my mother said, "Faye this isn't the time or place for such." My father and theirs both turned their heads to hide their smiling and sequestered laughter. Since that was perhaps my first attempt at standup comedy, I treasure that phrase and use it to this very day.
Omg how could I forget that. Huckleberry Finn was (and remains) one of my favourite books. Time for a reread!
Welcome to the forum, @Jo White ! There is a place for introductions if you would like to tell everyone a little about yourself, likes and dislikes, where you live, and such as that. At the top left of the main page, you will see “Notices and Announcements”, and one of the sub-forums under that is Introductions. I am a greeter here, so if you have any questions about the forum, I am glad to be of help.
