I have Shirley but only twice. It was scary. I wouldn't mind an exploring sea adventure. Say early 1700's?
Happy New Year, Craig and Terence. Let's hope we all have the best one ever. I don't know anything about Sea Adventures or the Conquistadors. Y'all will have to lead and I'll try to follow.
I'm happy with searching for the Lost City of Gold Craig. Lets hope 2022 is a better year for us all.
I once read a brilliant book about Francisco Pizarro a Spanish conquistador. I have spent at least a frustrating hour looking for the book in my library to no avail. I remember now I 'lent' it to my youngest daughter about a decade ago. At least I found my old copy of The King's Fifth. A ripping historical yawn about another Spanish Conquistador called Captain Mendoza and his merry men like Estaban de Sandoval, and priest Father Francisco, searching for the fabled city of gold Cibola. Interestingly, they had an Indian girl as a guide and interpreter called Zia who had her own reasons for joining the men. The Lust for gold drove these steel helmeted men of the 16th century.
Yes I may have read that too which gave me a childhood fascination with the Spanish Conquistadors. Later found out that they were barbaric and brutal to the conquered Indian tribes.
I think maybe we can. But none of us like a dragged out story. What say you Terry. Do we catalogue the cruise to the the American continent first and then the search for El Dorado.
Spanish explorers who colonized Central America and portions of South America called the New World in the name of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. As the two greedy monarchs were gold mad they asked the leaders of the colonies to find them gold in the New World. Word filtered thru from the natives that a City of Gold called El Dorado existed in the South American jungle. If proved to be a legend only but many died trying to find it. Perhaps we will find it and put the myth to bed forever and become famous and rich?
Agreed Craig about the Conquistadors being barbaric. I don't mind just getting dropped off by a boat and playing it from there.
I'm easy Craig and Shirley, Mainly the Spanish Conquistadors were first followed by Portuguese, English, French, Dutch, German, Irish, ...I think. One thing I think from reading, is that many nations had beach heads of Colonization that sometimes prospered or not. Vainglorious Conquistadors were brutal indeed, but what about a Dutch, English or French frigate dropping us off to search for the Golden and fabled city of El Dorado and waiting in a secluded bay with backup aplenty? Marines. Give gifts and make friends with any locals and stay alert. The Spanish and Portugese were cruel, so maybe a French venture to find El Dorado? The French didn't make any claims on S America, but a city of Gold! C'est tres bon! How about, we could play the exploring party, with Leaders, Soldiers, Priest, Guide, Dogs, donkeys, .... A quiet paralell story might be the hopefully dull tale of our French naval captain Debois making his visit quiet and friendly with the locals. The land is fractured with many hidden deep caves hidden by jungle and beasts as was thought to be the terrain. Ever see the movie Apocalyto? Mel Gibson made it I think? Het's a few more infamous pics of that time. I reckon 12 soldiers, 4 corporals, 2 medic/soldiers, 3 sergeants, one priest, 2 Lieutenants, one Guide and translator, one Cartographer, one Lt engineer, one artist and scribe, 3 donkeys 3 War dogs and one Captain. Thats thirty five I rougly count. Happy to be a Lieuntenant or Priest. Yeah, I say onto you, .... Will you lead us Craig? or Captain Dela Bosca? Whatever....
