I've been too lazy to make this for several years but this is my own creation. Even the crust is from scratch.

I asked Barney how his ear got hurt. He says "From scratch".

I'm so darn funny I can't stand myself.

One more "chitlin memory." My mother was always fastidiously clean and very particular about cleanliness in the kitchen/food handling area. I remember that she wouldn't go near chitlins that anyone cleaned except herself; she didn't want to find any "bonus" material in those intestines. :D:D She never liked eating in restaurants because she couldn't see the kitchen and whether the cook was clean enough.

If she'd seen me cooking she wouldn't have risked a bite.
When you're only cooking for yourself you can get slack. I do anyhow.

That looks good! I can never get my crusts that round...it's a fault I fear I shall never correct.

edit to add: I make a crust that rises in the fridge for 3 days. It lets me spread the making of the pie over several days...it's more time-consuming than one might think when you make the dough, make the sauce, chop veggies and fresh-shred the cheese.

I get good round crusts because I'm a well-rounded person. You might be having trouble because you're kind of square.

... and yes, it did take me that long to come up with that.

All this talk about pizza has me looking on line for a place near me.

-It's Friday night and the Pizza Hut in the main town in the county closes at 9PM.
-My favorite Mom & Pop place closes at 9PM.
    -There's a Domino's in town...I can pick up until 1AM. It's about a 15 minute drive. But I don't like Domino's.
-Papa John's is my favorite. They're 1/2hour away and close at 10PM.

This is the downside to living where I do. The upside is this imposes impulse control and forces me to eat at home as I should, both for my health and for my budget.

But I really want a Papa John's pizza. I've not had one in years.

I don't like Domino's either but never had a Papa John's. I don't know what impulse control is unless it's something from Star Trek.
About chitlins and other stuff, I remember reading something years ago about bacon and such being considered low class food that the white plantation owners wouldn't eat and the slaves got the so-called poorer cuts from the pig - hence the phrase "eating high off the hog".

The cats did finally eat most of the leftover chitlins. I've noticed that mine and maybe all are hesitant about food that is new to them. Ken, if you read this do you see that too?

I did not know that. There are lots of popular foods that were once considered to be trash. Flank steak used to be a cheap cut, then popularity drove up the price. I've used chicken wings as crab bait once upon a time.

Regarding food phrases: Beth's comment about not wanting to send her sister-in-law (I believe) dark-crusted bread reminded me that bread used to be baked directly on coals in the oven, where the bottom would burn and have ashes on it. So the master of the house got "the upper crust."

So here's what I did tonight:

I don't go out to eat much, so I figured a Friday night drive to go get pizza would be in order after all. And I do like driving in this rural area, especially into the next county where Papa John's is...it's actually fun. I got dressed (ready to immediately hop in my car once I placed the order), went online to Papa John's website, decided to order through the local store's website (thank goodness I did), and saw that their Carry Out shuts down at 9:40PM. There was no way I was gonna make it. (I didn't stop to think that 9:40 might be when they stop taking orders, but I wasn't gonna make a high anxiety evening out of this.) I then went to the Domino's website thinking I would settle for that. As I got ready to order, I looked at the pics of their pizza, remembered how much I really dislike it, and decided that rather than buy something I don't really like, I'll plan to go get Papa John's some other night.

I got back in my lounging attire, dug some leftover Chinese food out of the freezer, and have it defrosting.

So goes another exciting Friday night in central Virginia. I wonder how Patrick Henry enjoyed his life here.

We may soon be living in times where we wish for some of the duller days we've had. I hope not but I'm expecting several types of civil disorder in our country in the not too distant future. Rural areas will have it best, followed by small towns. I think the cities will burn.

I found a thread called Protests and Riots in News. I read a few posts there and I bet anything I have to say has been covered. Oh well.
