Weather stinks here the last couple of days. Saturday was great, Sunday not so much, yesterday and today it's been a nearly-steady drizzle, temps mid 60s. My lifestyle changes this time of year, and some of that isn't so bad. I made clam chowder tonight, more of a fall type recipe. And the Buffalo Bills will open this NFL season on Thursday -- via antenna which is all I have besides streaming. Any games that are on cable I never see.
We had our first temperature down to freezing yesterday morning, but today has warmed and things are bight. Little harm was done by the cool temps, but we decided to harvest all the non-hardy crops outside and in the big greenhouse since it is so much work to maintain heat there. Outside cucumbers and squash were picked and the harvest was somewhat disappointing, as the 6+ weeks of nearly constant rain and cool temps has compromised much of the growth there. We still have a few things going in the small greenhouse and the attached one, but that may stop soon as well. We are supposed to be hit hard by the remnants of a typhoon in the next days, but we are protected by mountains and the tropical stuff is usually weakened considerably by the time the storms get this far north. Storms coming off Siberia during the winter months are much stronger. Wife is working to preserve tomatoes, tomatillos, and cucumber remnants at the moment. It is sunny and quite windy at the moments, and our beautiful golden leaves are cascading down in a shower that resembles yellow snowfall. The darkness will descend soon and we will tough it out until next April.
It was perfect here today, low 80s, low humidity, no clouds. Took the Vette to lunch, had the top off. A few mornings ago it was down to 43 and the next day we only had a high in the low 60s although bright and sunny. Fall is coming! I just washed my truck, getting it ready to trade in, and am now nursing my first Dirty Martini.

The Japanese are used to hearing of earthquakes and storms but this was the worst they had ever experienced.
They are playing up this typhoon as a global warming/climate change thing. Not uncommon for typhoons to have this much rain, but what is unusual is for it to travel this far north. If this had just hit Taiwan or the Philippines, it wouldn't have been noticed, but when it hits an industrialized built-up area, it causes havoc. I am sure that this could have happened a century ago or two and people would have just dealt with it. What makes it so bad is that everything is paved and there is development underground, which didn't exist then. Korea was also hit, and it caused bad things in the South, but I didn't read of anything bad happening in the North where there is little or no commercial development. Anyway, that is my take and I dealt with Typhoons for a few years in my past life.
Similar to Hurricane Harvey in 2017; 60.58" of rain in 4 days. That was a big mess but we didn't even lose power and stayed high and dry. Today is warm and sunny; feels like fall with the changing light.
In Florida the weather isn't that predictable but tonight is to be in the high 60s,low 70s maybe rain.
Down to near freezing again this morning and the snow is marching sown the mountainsides. It will soon be down here. Last year yesterday was our first big snow. Wife was kept awake by the thought that not all the root crops are harvested yet. We got 28 ponds of carrots yesterday, but only about half are harvested. Next are the beets, then the potatoes. Kale, Brussels sprouts and leeks are las to leave the garden. Onions were harvested and put to cure before we got the carrots. I think it will be a hard freeze by the weekend, but who knows?
Oh my! We better get moving. Usually we get our first snow the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. But this year feels different. We can't even get to the potatoes yet.
86 degrees and keeping an eye on "Ian," which is predicted to be a major hurricane early next week. Probably headed for Florida, though.
I have seen quite a number of paths predicted for the storm. Many seem to point to the north Gulf coast. Hopefully it won't be as bad as they are now predicting.
