You only technically need the rings when you are preparing stuff, right? You can take the outer rings off as soon as the lids seal? That's the way I think my mom did it. So you don't need as many rings.
Yes, some people do take the rings off. I remember that my mother would not; she didn't trust the lids to stay on (even though we had to pry them off).
They are masquerading as American with flags and such, but many are of Chinese origin and fool anyone who is not looking. Who knows what is one the inside of the lids even if you wash them. Some of the Chinese lids don't have the "pop" that tells you it is sealed.
In my BM book of instructions it says remove the rings for safety ….meaning you may be under the impression jars are sealed by leaving the rings on …..however if they are not sealed and you eat them your are risking your life by eating the contents @Beth Gallagher
As far as I know the most popular BM jars are either Wide Mouth or standard ( smaller ) I have some standard but they are lurking in the back of the cupboard as they are not really suitable if you want to pack apricots neatly in a jar . I’m hoping I can bottle tomatoes this summer if so they will ideal. I’ve been told on a crafty / cooking / general chat forum quite a few use the screw on lids I posted up here ^^^post 1647 so I’m ready armed with lots for lids for summer fruit around Christmas @Mary Stetler
AND they buckle while canning making all your work / effort worthless just binned…..or do as I did with some of the fruit freeze it. ( I mainly preserve apricots apples and plums ) but might as well stewed and frozen in the first place Nah if I can’t get the BM brand it’s the others I posted …..I have to recheck but I think they are made in Italy @Don Alaska
Yep these are brass / plastic lined made in Italy and they fit BM jars ( I bought 20 lids here) and a few more i found in a warehouse in Adelaide https://www.kitchenwarehouse.com.au/Bormioli-Rocco-Quattro-Stagioni-Caps-D86-Pack-of-2
I promised I’d be good and not go on and on about jars and preserving …..so now I’ll be in deep Pooh ….won’t I Well I just wanted to quickly say I actually seen Agee brand of preserving jars almost identical to the 450 ml size of Ball Mason jars and with the same 2 piece lids just like BM had ( was in a big chain store called Big W ) Agee brand has been around for many more years than I care to remember however I’ve never seen jars in Agee brand in the size i seen today So maybe they’ve picked up where BM left us in the lurch.
I remember AGEE, like it's some sort of old time legacy brand. Don't worry about "going on" about something like this...I bet there's folks who are (or who will) derive a benefit. You may have saved someone's canning season and not even know it.
I bought some Amish-made wooden spoons from Lancaster Cast Iron (via Amazon). They were overpriced but "Made in USA". Someday I'm going to buy one of their overpriced cast iron skillets.
