Chicken (population 12) is not that far north, but it's inland (almost on the Canadian border.) Does being nearer the coast make things more moderate, Don?
Me too, Teresa Levitt. I don't have high blood pressure usually but felt like my head was going to blow worrying about the coming Siberian express. And the weather people don't seem to have a handle on what to expect. This morning we were doing a bit more 'chinking' of 'cracks' and it was 4 degrees. But then I checked the weather and it indicated the warmest temperature was going to be 27 above zero at MIDNIGHT! The news broad casts were saying we were in for at least 12 inches of snow in the coming storm after three inches tonight. Now they are saying 4 inches total but severe winds and cold. 27mph below zero! Good, it will be a dry snow. Not good at the farm because of drifting from fields. I think like the song says--Jesus take the wheel. Then, get this! Next Friday it is supposed to be in the 40s!
The water and even the ice moderate the temperatures. That is why Fairbanks and Fort Yukon are usually colder in winter than the coastal towns further north. The interior, however is usually dead still as far as wind goes, while the coast can be very windy. I think I have posted before about the coldest I have ever been, and that was on the coast, not in the interior. On my cold experience, it was in Kotzebue, once the polar bear hunting capital of the world until all the bears were killed off early in the 20th century, or perhaps late in the 19th. The temperature was about -40, but the wind was in excess of 50 mph, so the wind chill was around -90 F. I was leaving the old hospital there (they since have built a new one) and began my walk across the parking lot to my quarters when a maintenance truck pulled beside me and told me to get back inside immediately, as my face was visibly freezing. I hadn't been outside the door more than 5 or 10 minutes and I was well dressed for the weather...except my face was not covered and I had no ruff to pull forward. I went back in, had a cup of coffee, and proceeded to my quarters when the wind died a bit. I have so many stories about the cold from my own experience and that of others that it would be a burden to tell more. Anyway, the wind mixes the air layers, so the actual temperature moderates. We are in a valley here, so the temperatures are colder than many areas around. If the wind is calm, the cold air settles in the low spots.
Mary...although we're not as far north..it's on the way...i am a worrier when it comes to deadly temperatures...critters...getting out with lil dog...I keep mineral oil on her paws ..she has boots...even ones we made...no go...she has paper..no go...paw carries her to fav spot...while i feed little feral cats...our daughter is in fla...surgery on granddaughter went well..they'll be in warm til after Jan 5... heck...i even worry about the birds and squirrels...we have heated water for them...fish ponds got heat...pray no power out...i will be in here to see about everyone...
I’ve already posted this photo ( in games section ) taken by our neighbours cause we are away till tomorrow It was the first day of summer in Australia yesterday altho most go by the 1st of the month now days but thats NOT i was taught in school …. Anyway this was a weird thunderstorm that passed through our area yesterday ( 2 hours drive from our capitol city of South Aust .,Adelaide ) it was about a 35c day
They are predicting a low of 11 degrees F tomorrow morning, followed by at least 48 hours of below freezing temperature. Long time since that happened. Maybe it will help reduce the insects this coming summer—at least fleas, mosquitoes, & gnats.
The beginning of Dayton's first winter storm is happening right now. Our flag was setting off the alert constantly so I braved the wind and snow to shorten the flag. Whew! I love to see the bare trees blanketed with snow though.
The "arctic blast" has made it to Houston, too. Already down to 28 degrees and the wind is crazy; I saw that there are 30-40 mph gusts. Like Nancy, we are not supposed to be above freezing for 2 or 3 days. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Predicted to be in the teens tonight.
There was a cold rain all day...started out as ice. The temps have gradually climbed to the low 40s, where it's gonna stay until 7AM. Then the bottom drops out. At noon tomorrow it's gonna be 24°F/Wind Chill 11°F At midnight it's gonna be 8°F/Wind Chill -7°F Sometime overnight it's supposed to hit 6°F/Wind Chill -6°F Saturday and Sunday are not gonna be much better I set aside some of the denser firewood for nights like this, but I might still have to get up in the middle of the night and chuck more logs in the wood stove, especially with that wind.
It is 6 degrees this morning with a small northwest breeze making it feel like -10. I left my coffee cup on the porch last night and what little coffee was left in the cup is frozen. Even though it is supposed to be sunny, I think I’ll delay my plans of putting up the pool…….
Yes, it is definitely Brrrr! Weather here, today. We were supposed to get snow, but it missed us except for a few random flakes I saw flying in the air last night when I let the dogs out at 2am. Bobby is right to delay putting up the swimming pool if that silly man thinks he is going to see me out running around in my swimming suit at -10 degrees ……. What an optimist !
It was -12 yesterday when I walked down to get our mail. Had on my winter parka and gloves, but still came back feeling almost frozen. Last night, had to have the thermostat set at 80 last night. In this kind of weather, this apartment doesn't stay "cozy warm" that much. As I write this, at 6:30 MT, it is -15 outside. Wife has four days off, which includes today (Friday) and Monday. Want to go out for breakfast, but. By 10AM, it will be 0, which is better than -15, so we'll see. I sure feel sorry for all of the farmers/ranchers who have to feed/water livestock, but livestock have to be fed/watered.
-31 with wind chill...never been in this before...checked and fed feral in heat shelter...hot food and water...our lil dog was bundled up...paw carried her out..no go...we have puppy pads everywhere...she's insistent on out...40 mile winds....
I didn't think of the insects. Some of my firewood has had powder post beetles/woodworms in it. I wonder if this hard freeze will help. It will probably kill everything but the eggs, I imagine.
