We are going to our neighbours for tea , it’s Christmas Eve here in Aussie land . I’ve boiled a dozen eggs to take over as well as chicken skewers and a plate of munchies like dried fruits and nuts / ginger bread biscuits / and other munchies We’ve been invited for lunch and tea tomorrow as well but we are old fuddy duddies set in our ways so we are doing our thing for lunch and will go over late afternoon to say hello as we won’t want anything to eat However I will take the trifle I’ve made as well as ham and marinated chicken legs I’ve bought to cook tomorrow. We always have a prawn cocktail for lunch with homemade light cream based sauce ,then we’d normally have roast chicken or pork with the trimmings ,but this year we are having a salad with freshly sliced ham and desert will be plum pudding with freshly made custard (don’t like custard bought in cartons )
My British mother used to make trifle. Man, it's been decades since I've had it. Have a nice Christmas, Kate.
Thank you @John Brunner I’m always mixed up about your Christmas celebrations and there is talk of having thanks giving here in Aust
What's the confusion about our Christmas? I've had friends from South American countries and they place a great emphasis on Christmas Eve gatherings (which includes going from house-to-house.) That's not the case here, at least the circles I've traveled in. There are "holiday parties," but Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are generally reserved for family gatherings. And doesn't Australia already have celebrations around harvest time (Thanksgiving), or is that not nationwide?
I thought you had thanks giving and that was your Christmas celebration?? when you have festive foods ect . (I’ve never asked or looked up the meaning of TG ) so please excuse my lack of knowledge about the celebration. I’ve wondered in recent years if you also celebrate on Dec 25 with family get togethers /festive decorations / food / gift giving. @John Brunner It’s harvest time for cereal grains in summer no festivities associated with that only long hours of work. I live in a huge grain growing area where there are ( SOME )farmers grow crops for San Remo (pasta makers)I believe is called “hard wheat” but no celebrations attached to that either.
After I typed out my response, Kate, I thought I'd post it here so we could all talk about our holiday traditions and experiences without dragging the Supper topic too far afield (because given the opportunity, I will drag far afield.)
We're picking up steaks, baked potatoes and salads from a local steakhouse for our Christmas Eve dinner. Cheesecake with raspberry sauce for dessert.
I couldn't decide so after checking here for ideas, I will have Famous Daves jalapeno cornbread and chili.
Salad. Leftover Mexican chicken breast topped with cheese and chorizo. Mexican rice. Grocery store mince pie.
