Yeh, I know you know where you grew up. I know where I grew up, too. But this is interesting. Fifteen questions on the way you pronounce words or the phrases you use. Some folks say the questions change up (a husband takes the quiz and then his wife does it and gets different questions.) This one is on the NY Times site. It guesses a town/city (may list several), but is behind a paywall. Some ad blockers get around it. My ad blocker cannot. This one is on Babble. It put me in the Northeast. (WRONG! I was born in Indiana and moved to Virginia as a kid, where I've lived ever since.) Reactions are all over the place, just like horoscopes. Anyway, I thought it would be interesting.
Babble says I'm from California. While I did live in Southern California for 12 years, I was in Michigan for the first 17, in Texas for more than 20 after California, and have been in Maine for the past 23 years.
Babble says I'm from the northeast. Born and raised in Chicago, transplanted to Kentucky. This quiz isn't very accurate but kind of fun anyway.
Babble says I’m from the south. Virginia is my home state, then Maryland is where I’ve lived the longest. Not very southern IMO.
But you could always list the other 14: #2-Are you really sure? #3-Are you really really sure? #4-Are you really really really sure? #5-Are you really really really really sure? #6-Are you really really really really really sure? #7-Are you really really really really really really sure? #8-Are you really really really really really really really sure? #9-Are you really really really really really really really really sure? #10-Are you really really really really really really really really really sure? #11-Are you really really really really really really really really really really sure? #12-Are you really really really really really really really really really really really sure? #13-Are you really really really really really really really really really really really really sure? #14-Are you really really really really really really really really really really really really really sure?
Interesting. There's a site out there that gathers input from people like us in order to refine this, and to gather regional linguistics data for other uses. The problem is that it asks for a bunch of contact data AND (in order to fulfill its mission) it asks for a bunch of personal "where did you live/when did you live there" information. Then it runs through some number of similar "puh-KAHN/PEE-kan" questions in an information-gathering mode. I passed.
