I am posting this as much as a reminder for myself as for information for the rest of you, but it can serve as both.

Currently, I have the forum set to allow editing of a post for up to fifteen minutes after it is posted. I would love to be able to allow anyone to edit their posts whenever they notice a typo, a misspelling, or a grammatical error that they had allowed to slip into their post. I know that I like being able to do that for my own posts, and I am sure that some of you feel the same.

The reason I limit the amount of time that someone can edit a post is that I have run several forums over the past several years, and every forum has included people who, at some point, out of anger or simply a desire to clean the Internet of their presence, will feel the need to delete every post they have made in a forum or, if that is not allowed, edit out all of the words in the post, leaving the remainder of the threads unintelligible or broken.

There are some safeguards that can be put into place but I haven't had the time to tweak everything here yet, or to add any plugins, for that matter, other than the one that allows members to change their name one time, in order to facilitate those who missed the messages about the use of two names here.

I can easily change the amount of time that a post can be edited, but I want to give it some more thought. When someone says something that others then reply to, there is a potential problem that can occur when the original poster then edits what he or she had said, since it can serve to make the replies seem disjointed or even foolish. Some people have been known to do that deliberately but, given that we are all mature people here, I would like to think that this will not be a problem in this particular forum.

I do want you to be able to correct any errors that you might make in a forum post, though. Probably, what I'll do is allow greater editing capabilities as a reward for those who have met certain milestones, perhaps even using the trophy system that the Xenforo software uses. Between the flu and whatever the heck else happened to me a week ago, I have gotten behind on some things, but I'll get to it as soon as I can. Feel free to remind but not, like, every day or anything.

As I tell my wife, if I promise that I am going to do something, I'll do it. There's no need to remind me every six months.

I have been on many forums and even moderated on one and understand what can happen with the edit button. There were issues I came across where members had considerably changed their original post which left many of the comments making no sense at all. I think most of us, read our posts right after submitting and although I'm sure we have all missed something, I don't think the edit feature has to be any longer than 15 minutes. Just throwing in my two cents!

I think you leave more then enough time for edits. I think most people see things like typo's right away. The only suggestion I can make, and this may not be totally relevant to your forum, is occasionally if the typo is in the thread title, you can't edit that, not even in edit mode, you have to delete the entire post and re-post it. I don't know if this is something that moderators can watch for or not, I think it looks awful to see a new thread with a typo right in the title. As far as the body text goes I think most people that have been on the internet awhile just accept that sometimes typo's are a reflection of the actual poster.

As it comes naturally, that is not something that I can edit from my end either, although I believe there is a plugin that allows that.

I have changed the permissions on the forum to allow editing of a post for up to 24 hours, so you will be able to make edits to your posts for up to a day.

I remember editing the title of a thread a couple of times in different forums, so it can be done. It was when I first started joining forums. That was months ago and the only thing that I remember was the words 'edit' and 'modify'. But it can be done.

Okay, Ken stay on topic, I apologize. Thank you for extending the time for editing. I have found typos or grammatical errors when I've gone back read some of my own posts.

Yes, titles can be edited. Earlier, in this forum, they could not, but that was a flaw in the theme that I was using, not in the forum software itself. That has been corrected. The point of this thread, however, was that I have extended the amount of time in which a post can be edited from fifteen minutes to twenty-four hours.

Thank you Ken. Some of us, myself included, are slow and need the extra time to tweak it a little....until it is perfect.;) Fifteen minutes seemed like a sprint!

I had trouble with that myself. Sometimes, I would write a post, and then later think of a link I wanted to add or more information that I wanted to put in; but of course I was always past the editing time by then. Plus, that is ALWAYS when I would find those stupid typos that i missed even after going back through my post specifically to edit those out.
Having 24 hours to fix things seems like a great idea to me also ...... thank you ! !

Rrrrggghhh ! ! I STILL can't edit the title, Ken.
It brings up the body of the post, and no way that I can see to get to the title. I am not sure if it is due to an incompatibility with the ipad, or just that i don't know how to get the title back up so that I can fix the spelling mistake I just made.
If there are directions to specifically edit the title, please post them for those of us who are tech-dummies, like me.

Never mind. I figured it out.

    • Upper right of the first post in the thread.
    • Thread Tools
    • Edit Thread
    • When you click edit thread, the title will appear in a box.
    • Once you have edited it, click "Save Changes."
Since I wouldn't think of using an iPad for a computer, I don't know what will or will not work with an iPad.

Ken, I just set up a new thread in the Food & Drink Section called "Bone Broth" but it's more about health than a delicious food recipe so should it be moved to the Health section? I mention in the first section about losing weight while you sleep and the rest is about health benefits.

I'm sorry, but I didn't think of that ahead of time. Thank you.
