Hey @Marie Mallery ! Did you know there was a quote in the Bible about punishing the Jews for not letting the ground rest every 7 years? I wonder if it is true. I went to the local health food store and asked if they would be interested in some of my 'fresh weeds'.
That was a simple agricultural principle. Since God didn't feel like sending the Israelites to ag school, He made it a law. The dietary laws were similarly formed, I believe.

My days of winning at shooting matches are a good memory now, just old body does not move fast enough but still very accurate....
That's good you're still accurate, Tex, guess we all, are not quite what we used to be, huh? Memories are nice too.
Ok, I must admit I had a possum that had been eating my chicks in a live trap. I took aim and missed. He was so shocked, he didn't even PLAY dead.
They eat ticks which I like. But I don't want them on my farm. Normally I take them to a large country cemetery and turn them lose but if all I have available is my large trap that is hard to handle, I do dispatch them. I like my chickens better. Sorry.
I understand, Mary, I feel the same about my chickens too. I just remembered the ad I had read, when I saw your post, and thought about what they said, on how misunderstood they are and they are perfect for the environment too. Also, they said please don't kill them in the ad.
I don't kill anything unnecessarily. I know I said I carry a knife everywhere but mostly for amazon boxes, baling twine, veggies, sod, tough weeds...
We are old now so it is harder to protect our resources from wildlife. But before there were ways to do so without too much work. I can just about say a bear couldn't get in our chicken pens about 22 years ago now we have to depend on animals to help with chasing them off. We had a coon in the pen last month, Leo our dog let up know and Jake chased it out. Before it never would have gotten into the pen, we had layers of wire around the pen and on the floor for first couple decades. Some don't want a dog ,that would be another job so they do what they feel is best. We do try not to kill anything but if it comes to us or ours, we would if we had to.
