Thanks for the vid. I fully expected your source to be Mormon. That community is big on "prepping," and they give free lessons to the public on food storage/preservation...just not in my region.
@John Brunner -- I googled "best deal on American canner" and got a lot of hits. Take a look... https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=best+deal+on+an+american+canner#pvs=0 ETA--you might change the search parameters to include the model number you want.
Thanks. All of those are the list price, with a couple of exceptions: The only deal there is an Amazon link that says "41 qt" at the price of the 10qt. When you click on the link, it goes to the 10qt product page. There IS a listing on EBay for the 16qt model (the smallest canner that processes 7 quart jars.) List is $380. EBay price $320 delivered. Hmmmm....
OK, I just bought myself a Christmas gift. When I added the canner to the EBay cart, it applied a $15 discount for some reason, which just about covered the tax. Now I need to shop for jars...
We have been most happy with the Superb jar lids. The jars don't seem to make a difference. Kerr and Ball--the only other brands American made--have decreased i quality in recent years, but Superb was developed to satisfy the needs of the Amish and have expanded production. Give them a try or compare them and see what you think.
I mostly just use Ball jars and lids, though I do have some Kerr. It seems like I found the best prices at Walmart but I haven't bought any in a while.
I think a lot of the Amazon jars are sold by 3rd party sellers, too. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
A friend just called and she had an old All American #7 canner. 15.5qt just like the non-returnable order I just place. She's gonna give it to me. sigh Now I'll have 2. And I haven't seen the old one. I understand that parts (pressure valves, etc) may be tough to get.
I just bought a dozen original ball mason jars on eBay 475 mill size with 60 spare New disc lids ( beware some jars branded “ mason jars” are made in china ) Cost me $35 in total including the postage ….think the jars are around $60 for a Dozen ( new) getting 60 new flat disk lids is a bonus ..good quality ones that are expensive … this is the brand of lids I’m getting with the jars https://www.superbsealing.com/ You should be able to cancel a eBay order ..think you have to contact the seller to do that @John Brunner
I got a UPS notification within less than 1/2 hour, and it will arrive Thursday. My friend is gonna give me her canner, anyway. It's just as well. I end up messing with old used stuff and buying new eventually. If I learn real good, it will give me a 14 quart canning capacity.
When you think about it’s prob a good thing to start new @John Brunner cause altho your friend was good enough to give you one ..you never know what ….may need replacing like sealing rings / the valve / and be carful they can be highly dangerous if not used correctly ( risk of being scalded and used canners can have buckled bottoms from being heated to high …….. That’s one of the instructions that’s come with canners …..don’t heat to high or you risk buckling the bottom if you haven’t got one already get yourself a rack for bottom of canner ( inside) and a jar lifter https://ballmason.com.au/products/ball-secure-grip-jar-lifter?_pos=1&_psq=Jar+lifter+&_ss=e&_v=1.0 https://ballmason.com.au/products/presto-pressure-canner-rack?_pos=2&_psq=Canner+&_ss=e&_v=1.0
The jars I bought on eBay yesterday are already in their way to me ….the actual jars were only $15 for the dozen postage is the killer $20 …
