    Question to the original poster...

    How much did you make an hr at this job? Not everyone gets paid good enough to be able to rely on the piddly little amount that SS is willing to cough up at retirement. Those same people needed every dollar of those checks to get by. So just because you did it...doesn't mean we all could.

    I guess I worked, saved, and retired at just the right time period (1962-1998), and took full advantage of my Employers (Douglas, McDonnell-Douglas, and Boeing) contributing to my weekly savings.

    After 36 years, this enabled me to buy a spacious, comfortable home in the High Desert, paying 50% down and paying off the 30-year mortgage in 12 years.

    I was Smart...AND Lucky!

    I was not paid by the hour. I was paid by commissions, fees, overwrites as a Independent Contractor.

    Well some of us have spent a lifetime at minimum wage. Some of us haven't had the chance to get some fancy career. Some of us have chosen professions nobody wants. So not everyone will be that fortunate. I am happy for you. However, I will have to continue some sort of support job I'm sure.

    I think it's awesome that some of you could afford houses and cars and RVs and vacations and not have to work past retirement. I have not been able to do any of this. I have an apt I rent and a crappy vehicle to rely on and if I'm lucky to make it to 67 I will get a lousy $1100 a month for SS. I'm not complaining I'm just saying that stating that seniors shouldn't have to work is not really a fair assessment.

    Well Marci I had no guarantee. If I didn't make a sale I made nothing. I loved working on commission because there is no limit on how much you can earn. I did well enough over the years to be able to afford my present life style.

    The operative words in the OP are “have to” and I believe the answer is yes. Now, although the OP does say being employed, I’m not writing about that because it’s pretty obvious that if a senior needs extra cash then sure, go to work for someone who will do the trade off or don’t if that senior doesn’t need the bucks.

    What I am writing about is that it is absolutely imperative that no matter what age a person is, they should find something, anything to keep motivated and healthy in mind and body. Once we quit “doing” and lose interest in keeping mentally and physically challenged, it’s all downhill from there.
    One of Red Foxx’s more popular lines speaking about healthy people was, (near quote) “you’d feel like a derned fool dying from nothing”. Granted, he was talking about people who have no reason to die other than age related, but I’m saying that people who do nothing will die sooner and much harder.

    Marci, There are a couple of folks here that are quite successful. Some,come from a position of advantage altho they may not recognize it. Other are so far removed from there roots that they don’t remember the struggle. This sometimes appears as an apparent lack of empathy. There are one or two whom I firmly believe that think money equals worth

    I don't think it's awesome at all Marci. It's Motivation, Planning & making good choices.

    I would argue with you but I won't. I don't have it in me to try to explain something to someone who just won't understand.

    @Marci Pankratz

    Have-nots, like me, have little ability to relate realistically to "Haves", like, er, well, you know some.

    I can't relate to you Marci because I know nothing about you other than you live in Kansas. Married?, Divorced?, Widowed?, Children?, school drop out?
    I spent a good part of my life on the outside looking in and decided I wanted to be inside looking out.
