This is a riveting 17 minute address by the late legendary radio news commentator Paul Harvey. It was recorded on March 8, 2003 at the R&R Talk Radio Seminar. It was his last speech to the radio industry .

It's funny someone brought up Paul Harvey. I was just thinking about him last week. He always reminds me of the first night I set foot in Raleigh, NC.

I flew there from Ohio to make arrangements to move there permanently, arrived rather late at night, and checked into a motel. I turned on the radio in the motel room, and Paul Harvey was doing his regular radio show. I had never heard of Mr. Harvey before.

It was the summer of 1970, just a couple of months after the Kent State shootings. He was going on and on about how terrible college students are. They were all lazy hippies, rioters, drug addicts, and draft dodgers. I wish I could find that particular broadcast. His talk was almost frightening in those days, because it was long before shout radio became popular.

I thought he was a local person. Didn't realize at the time he was broadcasting out of Chicago. I wondered that night what kind of a place am I going to?

Harvey was a regular on the radio there. Later I came to enjoy some of his The Rest of the Story .tales they slipped in between the music, but I never quite got over my first impression of him.

What a noble gentleman! I enjoyed his life as often as I could listen on the radio. Thank you for posting that and bringing him back to life.

    Favorite Paul Harvey quotes...

"In times like these it helps to recall there have always been times like these."

"If 'pro' is the opposite of 'con' what is the opposite of 'progress'?"

Paul Harvey died in 2009, at the age of 90.

"His fans identified with his plain-spoken political commentary, but critics called him out of touch. He was an early supporter of the late Senator Joseph R. McCarthy and was a longtime backer of the Vietnam War."

"Perhaps Mr. Harvey’s most famous broadcast was in 1970, when he abandoned that support, announcing his opposition to President Richard M. Nixon’s expansion of the war and urging him to withdraw American forces.
“Mr. President, I love you, but you’re wrong,” Mr. Harvey said, shocking his listeners and drawing a barrage of letters and phone calls, including one from the White House."

"In 1976, Mr. Harvey began broadcasting “The Rest of the Story,” his anecdotal descriptions of the lives of famous people. The segments started chronologically, with the person’s identity revealed at the end. The stories were an attempt to capture “the heartbeats behind the headlines.”

Thanks! .. That's good to know, Joe.

Since I left Raleigh in 1975, I was wondering if my memory was messed up, and found out he did do the those story segments earlier, as part of news broadcasts. They were good. Held you in suspense until the end. They must have been playing reruns in Raleigh. ;)

"The Rest of the Story" was a Monday-through-Friday radio program originally hosted by Paul Harvey, beginning as a part of his newscasts during the Second World War and then premiering as its own series on the ABC Radio Networks in 1976.

One of many, except you never knew "The Rest of the Story" until the end.
