One of the dreams I have often when I am stressed or anxious about something involves stairs. Often it will be a different setting every time, but staircases are always involved. I am always trying to get to the top of the stairs, and for various reasons I can't. Usually the stairs are laid out in a really illogical way and/or there are obstacles in the way.

Usually the setting is some kind of very old house, oftentimes apparently abandoned. The staircases are usually ornate, Victorian-looking affairs, and the difficulty of getting up them can involve the stairs being extremely narrow (really way too narrow for real stairs), or railings that go across the staircase in places so that I would have to climb over them, or, sometimes there is no railing at all so that it is too dangerous to go up at all.

I have always thought it was pretty self-explanatory, in that I am worried about accomplishing something, or even bout an event/social situation, but I am wondering if anyone has studied dreams much and would have a more detailed interpretation? I am also wondering if there is significance to the house being old and/or abandoned.

The middle one makes sense, @Joe Riley, especially about emotional progress. I could see that as something that I'm probably working on at every time that I have had a dream like that, even if I wasn't aware of it at the time.

One of the times that I think I had a stairs dream several nights in a row was when I was trying to decide whether or not to leave my ex husband. This was some 25 years ago, but I remember some of those dreams very vividly.

I like the look of those painted stairs on the right, though. Very whimsical! :)

I often have similar dreams, except not with stairs. Mine usually involve a steep hill , filled with rocks and boulders, and the rest is muddy because it is pouring rain in the dream. There is a river at the bottom of the hill, and the waters are rising.
At the top is some kind of an old log cabin, and safety from the flooding below me, and a place to get in out of the rain, as well. Most of the time, I have at least some of my kids with me, and they are always still children in the dream.
We always seem to make it to the top, but just ahead of the swirling, raging floodwaters, and hoping that the river doesn't get any higher, because there is nowhere else to go anymore.

I have a lot of water dreams, all different scenarios but it's always that the water is rising or will engulf me. I always wake up before it does.

Haven't had these dreams for a few months now though.

I'm also in a lot of airplanes that are crashing, they're usually smaller planes not the big jumbo jets. At least there aren't many passengers on it. Usually just me, the pilot a few others.

I think I have posted that there are fortune tellers visiting our house when I was still in school. Although my mother is not really fond of fortune-telling, she gets it for free because those old women are her friends. They usually come in the late afternoon when I was in the living room doing my homework. That gave me a good insight on their conversations.

I remember that dream of the stairs in one of their chats. If you are aspiring for something that is difficult to achieve, it can be manifested in the stairs that you are trying to climb. And when the climb is easy that means you can achieve your aspiration soon. When you dream that you are falling or sliding down a stairway, that is a harbinger of an impending failure. Well, that's as far as I remember about dreaming of staircases.

Thankfully, no airplane crash dreams, so far. Although I hate flying in airplanes; for some odd reason, in my dreams........ I can FLY !
Sometimes, it is just me flying around (and not scared of heights at all); but one time, I was dreaming about some kind of big airliner, or maybe even a rocket ship, had a dashboard like that, with all of those flashing lights and buttons everywhere.
I was the pilot, and I knew exactly how to fly that monster ! It was an incredible dream, @Chrissy Page , and I am sure you would have liked that much better than the airplane crashing dreams.
It was a weird dream, and a whole lot of fun !

Stairs seem logical @ Diana Kristof because you have a challenge that you need to surmount. I think stairs would really fit in with something like that. The illogical part could be, that you are not sure what path you need to get there. I just think it would be symbolic of a challenge you are having in your life. It seems like stairs are the perfect representation of that.

This from my husband. When you dream of flying that means you are physically joyful (whatever that term means, don't ask me). Your mood is in its peak and your brain is working pretty well that it tries to find a way to express the ecstatic feeling. And flying is one activity that means going up or ascending. In layman's terms, your physical condition is very good and your mind is also relaxed and peaceful such that you are feeling an invisible ecstasy which your mind expresses in that dream of flying. But when you fall or slide down, that is a different story.

The worst stairs are the "moving" kind. I had a couple of dreams about them after witnessing a twice-repeated spectacle at the Phoenix Sears Metrocenter Store, where I worked nights in the late '80s.

Just before closing, a guy rode down the 2nd. floor to 1st. floor escalator, which faced the Mall entrance, about 50 feet beyond. As he rode down, he pulled his loose shorts aside, and defecated onto the step behind him! Reached bottom, ran out the Mall doors, disappeared! This sick act was caught by Security on tape. If you can, picture the slotted escalator steps, engaging with the fixed comb at the bottom, grinding away at feces. Fortunately, I was not the one to clean it up. The entire escalator mechanism was opened up the next morning, requiring cleaning.

The jerk got away. Several days later, a repeat performance! Security, as disgusted as I was, were ready for him, he did his thing, and they caught him at the door, running out into the Mall. I never learned of the disposition of the case, as not long afterward, I took the position of Maintenance Technician, servicing stores in NM, TX, CA, and AZ. Lots of travel, per diem allowance, fun job!

My experiences while working for Sears could fill a book. I didn't intend to disgust anyone with the portrayal of this one. Perhaps it will make folks more aware of the "behind the scenes" drama employees must accept. Frank

Ah, an extremely informative dream to say the least Frank. As I see it, it probably means that no matter which direction you may go, whether up or down in the fast lane, you probably have to tread in some defecation along the way. The fleeing perpetrator of said deed probably symbolizes that you will probably never know who it was that placed the land mine for you to step in.

To a newbie, gettin' on is easy compared to figuring out how to get off gracefully.

"Stairway to Heaven was one of the biggest rock songs of the 1970s - loved, imitated and sometimes parodied. Now Led Zeppelin's classic track is back on the turntable, on a re-mastered version of the band's fourth album. 43 years after its release, the song continues to hold a place in many music fans' hearts.
Guitarist Jimmy Page gives a personal account of how a rock anthem came together".
