@Patsy Faye I wasn't even aware he'd gotten a 2nd dog. Apparently it's the brother of the one he already had. The neighbor across the street was scared they would attack me. I was trying to get the stupid hose to work to keep them away from me and the stray cats, but I had the long super kinky hose attached, because that's the one I use with the lawn chemicals, and the water just dribbled out due to the kinks. I swapped it out for the regular one in case it happens again. He obviously has the tools and knows how to fix the fence. I'd be happy if he'd just replace it, and also make sure they stay in the yard from his driveway, and out of mine/away from other neighbors' yards/animals. He has more money, strength and tools/equipment, and it wouldn't take much to make me happy. As the saying goes, good fences make good neighbors.

PS, I got the scoop while visiting the neighbors. The husband of the woman who was shot and killed in the neighborhood years back when I first moved in (he was shot, she was shot and died, and the shooter mistakenly (I guess) also shot her own husband) in a dispute when the claimed she was in fear of her life, has since died, from drinking too much, apparently. It's an odd little place I live in, but for the most part it's quiet, and most of us get along.

Yes, the fences on both sides here are in bad shape, too, but that's particularly bad because the tenants almost always have big dogs that bang into it, and one a few tenants ago had one of those motorized ride in cars he'd keep banging into the fence. Grrr. The back fence is the newest and is still in great shape. I'd be happy if the side neighbors fixed those fences. They both have tons of equipment and friends who could knock it out in a few hours...the other side neighbor just replaced his other side fence and built a deck. It's not as if the fence goes on for miles, it would have been the perfect time for him to replace it, except he has crap piled up all along it...old boats, grills, etc.

Now I'm more concerned about the one with the pits though, since they've apparently been accustomed to coming and going as they please. I can definitely see why you feel it should be his responsibility, and I agree. I wish people were more responsible these days and fixed what they broke, cleaned up after themselves, etc. My neighbor told him that he should make sure they don't go in my yard and also shouldn't go in there after them without checking first, because I protect myself (code for will shoot if threatened), and when he sees me out he'll ask, but apparently he's been in my yard without me knowing about it. Pickles should be safe in your yard and the strays should be safe in mine and in the driveway, too. I don't like interlopers.

@Diane Lane - I don't now the laws over there but surely there is someone you could report this too
Surely its an offence for neighbours dogs to come onto your property
What does 'he' say about all this ........................

We have leash laws, Patsy. Plus my backyard is fenced all around so Pickles should be safe from my neighbor''s pit bull but that pit bull always manages to get a hole in the fence.

I do get cats because they can get over the fence but it's the cat that's in trouble if it comes in my yard because Pickles does not like cats or birds.

Since there are so many dogs on that side, I think it's more that they all ram the fence when they hear Pickles is outside and that weakens it and a board will loosen and it's enough for a dog to squeeze through.

They also have a dachshund the same coloring as Pickles and I did a double take once when I saw it
In my yard knowing Pickles was inside.

@Chrissy Page - If there are 'leash laws' does that mean the dogs have to be on a leash in their back yard
If so - then they should be reported if dogs are loose

No, just when being walked outside.

They can't be loose anywhere unless maybe a dog park. I guess a strange dog in my fenced yard would be considered loose though. Not sure because I've never really looked up the law.

I really am pretty easy going also because Pickles is a barker so I'm happy my neighbors don't complain but I don't like my fence ruined or dog poop in my yard.

Gooooood morning seniors only. (Robin Williams voice).
Another overcast, gloomy sort of day here in bacon's birthplace. Chance of rain later. Well, I made it through yesterday just fine, and didn't have to resort to using algebra even once.
Yesterday, I spent some time looking through a big box of old family photos and stuff. I was surprised to learn my mom even saved all my report cards from grade school. As I looked through them, I noted my steady spiral down, from compliant to troublesome to extreme.
We were graded in a thing called "deportment". That was our general behavior. In the first grade, I was scared s***less of the nuns. So, I generally behaved well as I could.
I did flunk art class though. How do you fail art? Silhouettes. That's what done me in. Those black shadow pictures. How do you screw up one of those? Well, I found a way.
Our art teacher had each student Sit perfectly still in front of a white paper pinned to a wall. A light was on one side of us, and teacher traced the outline of our head on the paper. Then, we were to color in the outline, using a black crayon. A shadow picture of our head was then produced, which we could take home for our parents to frame and hang on the wall forever.
Well, all the black crayons were in use, so I started with the stub of a green crayon, my favorite color. It was too short, so I switched to a white one. About that time, the NIC (nun in charge) Noticed.
"Ike, what in the world are you doing"?
"There was no black, sister". We were supposed to address the nun's as "sister".
"Couldn't you wait? And why did you change color"?
"The green wore out and I am white so white should be the right color".
I never did get a grade in art higher than a D.
So, if you go out, be compliant. Someone may be grading you.
