I hate to admit this, but for me, it's The Wizard of Oz. It used to come on every year around the New Years and I couldn't wait for it to come on every year. Back in the 80s, by brother bought me the VHS of it. Last year, my mother called me to say that she saw it was coming on the next day - she just thought I'd like to know. That was the first time I'd seen it in probably 6-8 years and I remembered why I like it so much.
I would probably have to say Forrest Gump. For some reason, I also really like The Family Man. It has Nicholas Cage and Tia Leoni in it. The Mummy is also another one I watch over and over again. I just love it when the female character says, "what's a nice place like you, doing in a girl like this". She was so adorable when she was drunk!
One of mine is the German movie Fitzcarraldo. It was filmed on location in the south American jungle and features local tribespeople. It is the story of a man, played by the enigmatic Klaus Kinsky, who dreams of building an opera house in the town. In order to fund his dream he has to make a jungle expedition by boat. He and his companions travel up river, but have to haul the boat over a mountain and down the other side to return by a different route. The amazing thing about it is that there were no special effects or studio backlot, the feat was actually accomplished and filmed as it happened. There is a famous documentary of the making of the movie, showing how the lead actor and the director were constantly fighting, but the original film is a thrilling adventure to watch. It's all done in period costume as the story is set in the past.
I've watched "The Hammer" about 5 or 6 times, and could watch it over and over no problem... It's the true story of The Hammer - a Deaf MMA fighter/wrestler's struggles growing up and eventually going away to a Deaf University and falling in love... Just a great movie... truly shows what the Deaf world is like from a Deaf perspective.
I'm not sure I have an all time favorite movie but one of my favorites is "The Green Mile" . I also never tire of the Shawshank Redemption even though I have seen it about five times.
Funny you should mention those because I was going to say "The Shawshank Redemption". I've seen it several times as I often watch it when it's shown on television here. I enjoyed "The Green Mile" too, but I've only seen that one and a half times! The reason for the half was because I recorded it when it was on television, then after we'd sat through a large part of it, we discovered that the schedule had been incorrect and the end was missing. I'd really like to see it again. Despite liking those, I'm not really a big Stephen King fan. Another favourite from my youth was "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". I think I'm overdue to see that one again too.
Another one of my favorites is "The Gods Must Be Crazy". It's about a tribesman in Botswana (named Xi) whose tribe has no knowledge of the outside world and all of our "modern" inventions. Xi is out walking one day, when a plane flies overhead and the pilot throws out a Coke bottle. Xi brings it back to his village and trouble breaks out when everyone wants to own it. The tribe now experiences these new things like envy, anger and violence. Xi thinks that the gods are crazy to have sent them this "gift" and he embarks on a journey to return to to the gods. Of course, during his journey, he encounters modern people and inventions - and it's hilarious.
As a South African I know of that film, but I'm embarrassed to admit I've never seen it. I think I'll have to watch out for it on television.
The Shawshank Redemption is riveting for me as well. I've watched it about 3 times which is unheard of for me.
My favorite all time movie is The Peanuts Christmas (Charles Schultz) to be replaced by The Matrix with Keanu Reeves and all those that followed.
My husband always loved A Charlie Brown Christmas. I guess it brought back good memories for him. He loved the music and the story, but mostly the part at the end when Linus recites The Christmas Story. He also loves How The Grinch Stole Christmas. I not sure what that says about him!!
Hands down my favorite would be the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I am a bit of a horror film buff. Some of the additional Texas Chainsaw Massacre films are decent but nothing will ever beat the original classic in my eyes.
I always watch the Shawshank Redemption when it shows up on television, too. I'm not really a big Stephen King fan either, Michelle.What a blast from the past with the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I had forgotten about that one because its been so long since I've seen it. I'm due again, too
