Cuban leader Fidel Castro's mixed legacy "Supporters saw Fidel Castro as a tireless defender of the poor; critics say he drove his country into economic ruin".
I'll never forget, a few well dressed Cuban men came over to the bakery at Albertsons. They already had two grocery carts filled with steaks, fresh veggies and fruits. They seen a sheet cake with guava filling and wanted me to write a message in Spanish on it. I told them to write it down and I'd put it on the cake. There were a few little boy decorations on the corners. I said, one lucky boy.. The one spoke in rather fluent English and mention it was for "Elien Gonzales" He was over in Naples for a little celebration. This sweet little boy who seen his mother drowned, and made it over to Miami from Cuba. I was almost in a dead faint after decorating his cake. As the weeks followed, so did the events in Elien's life. Seeing the sweet child pulled away from his relatives by government officials broke my heart..Later on the little boy was used as a Castro Pawn. He was 5 when he was in Fl. and the one picture I seen of him he was in his smart uniform a young teen in Cuba...
Things have quieted down a little in Calle Ocho, (Little Havana) Miami, Fl. And reminisce over the unusual times some of us have had with my Cuban friends. What the future will hold with bright horizons. Versailles is one of my favorite places, and the Cuban waterhole for the latest news about Cuba.
Quite the contrast with Cuba since it has been declared that it is illegal for the entire week to play music or drink alcohol. Maybe things will be brighter, yes,...........but I still have reservations about his brother and the power he wields.
My family and other relatives took a winter trip to Havana Cuba. We flew in Dec. 23rd. 1958 from Miami. We stayed at the Ambros Mundos Hotel. It was also where Earnest Hemingway stayed and wrote the first chapters of "For Whom The Bell Toles." He lived in Cuba 8 yrs. His room was 511. I remember it being like a shrine. This picture of the hotel is same. Nothing destroyed, I thought all the beautiful hotels would be in complete shambles. The men in the family were looking for business opportunities in Havana. By Dec.29th. 1958 we were told it was best we leave NOW..This is what's fun about life. I met a friend many years later. She was on tour at the same time we were there. My friend stayed at the Hotel Horizontes Capri. In tact and was used in Godfather ll. When Corleone's brother walks in with the 2 million dollars. We could hear gun fire off in the distance. She told me they left by boat and we flew out to Miami. Told me do you know how close we were from Castro and rebels?
Hotel Horizontes Capri. It opened 1957, and used in Godfather ll. This is where my friend stayed on a tour (1958). It has a rooftop swimming pool. Rumor has it when I was in Miami the other day that flights are going to start in some areas of USA to Cuba this Monday comin up...
I couldn't help but share this image, from the Internet image pages like all the others pictures. My warmest sincere Thank-You to all the professional photographers who let us relive our own personal history. You made it happen.....
HISTORY WAS MADE...A water cannon salute...American Airlines plane arriving at Jose Marti: International Airport in Havana, the first Miami-Havana commercial flight in 50 yrs.
hilarious. The Russian-made jeep ferrying the ashes of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro broke down and needed to be pushed on Saturday en route to the late leader’s final resting place. story that's socialism
@Gary Ridenour Great one, Gary! Many World "Leaders" proclaimed him in death to be a wondrous supporter of the Cuban people! More appropriate than the Jeep being pushed might have been an I.E.D. beneath it! One final shake-up! Frank
